Kamala Harris's election victory is not guaranteed, warns David Axelrod.
In several swing states, a recent Ipsos poll revealed that Harris and Trump were evenly matched.
On Sunday, David Axelrod, a former advisor to Obama, advised against overestimating Vice President Kamala Harris's chances of winning the election, stating that Trump may still be ahead in crucial swing states.
The election is still highly competitive, and it's unclear who would win if it were held today, according to Axelrod, who believes it could be President Trump due to the Electoral College system.
According to a recent survey by Ipsos, Trump and Harris are virtually tied in seven crucial swing states, including Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, and Nevada. In these states, Harris received 42% of the vote share, while Trump garnered 40%, and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy obtained just 5%.
He stated that for a Democrat to win the battleground states, they must have a substantial advantage in the Electoral College.
Enthusiasm is crucial for the Democratic Party, but it needs to be transformed into active energy in order to secure the election, as Axelrod stated.
In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by two points over Trump, but lost the election despite this. In 2020, Biden won the popular vote by about four points, but Trump came close to winning the election due to Biden's narrow victories in key states.
Axelrod, who had criticized Biden's inner circle during his nomination, stated that Harris' campaign had made significant progress with voters, particularly in comparison to the Republican National Convention (RNC) last month.
The RNC in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was filled with euphoria a month ago, as everyone believed they would win the race by a landslide and sweep in big majorities in the House and Senate. However, things have changed dramatically since then.
In the swing states, 52% of respondents identified inflation as the most pressing issue, while 32% said immigration was the most important matter, according to an Ipsos poll conducted from July 31 to August 7.
