Irish educator detained at school for defying transgender policy court order.
Enoch Burke argued against using a transgender student's preferred name and pronoun.
This week, Irish teacher Enoch Burke was arrested for the third time since he first criticized his school two years ago for promoting transgender ideology.
On Monday, the National Police An Garda Síochána apprehended Burke near Wilson's Hospital School in County Westmeath, where he had previously taught history and German. Following his arrest, he was transported to Mountjoy Prison, a Dublin men's jail.
Josiah, Burke's brother, posted footage of the arrest on his X account.
During the video, Enoch Burke stated, "I will not abandon my students."
He stated that he has the right to his job, to work in this location, and to remain here without requiring students to take puberty blockers.
Burke criticized the officers arresting him, stating, "You don't have a duty to do what's wrong."
Newsweek reported that a judge ruled Burke should be returned to Mountjoy Prison after violating a court order to stay away from the campus. The judge said Burke could be released if he promised to abide by the court order in the future, but Burke did not give a definitive reply.
The Irish Times reports that Burke's case will be reviewed again on October 11th. Until then, he will remain in Mountjoy Prison.
In September 2022, Burke was suspended from his job due to publicly objecting to using a transgender student's preferred name and pronouns, as reported by Newsweek. He was later imprisoned for "contempt of court" after disregarding a High Court order to maintain a distance from the school during his disciplinary hearing.
Burke was unable to "in good conscience" comply with the order and was subsequently sentenced to Mountjoy Prison, where he remained until Dec. 2022.
In Sept. 2023, he was arrested and imprisoned again for violating the court order, but was later released by a judge in June during the school's break.
An Garda Síochána and Wilson's Hospital School were contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital for comment.
