On Sunday night, after a prolonged ailment, Donahue passed away, his family confirmed to NBC's "Today." His loved ones, including his wife of 44 years, Marlo Thomas, were present during his demise.
"The Phil Donahue Show" was hosted by Donahue from 1967 to 1996, making him a renowned figure in the daytime talk show industry. This year, President Biden bestowed upon him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The White House honored Phil Donahue as a journalist and television pioneer who created the first daytime talk show with audience participation and was one of the most influential programs of its time.
On May 21, 1980, Donahue married Thomas, and in 2020, the couple released a book titled "What Makes Marriage Last: 40 Celebrated Couples Share with Us the Secrets to a Happy Life" near their 40th anniversary.
Instead of flowers, Donahue's family requested that contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Phil Donahue/Notre Dame Scholarship Fund, as per NBC.
