Gov. Shapiro advises 'The View' not to underestimate Trump in upcoming debate with Harris.
Pennsylvania governor praises former president's debate skills.
On Friday, Gov. Josh Shapiro, D-Pa., warned the hosts of "The View" that former President Trump would be a formidable opponent for Vice President Kamala Harris in their upcoming presidential debate.
On Tuesday, Trump and Harris will clash in Philadelphia for the first time in a debate hosted by ABC News. Despite Harris's assumption of the Democratic Party's standard-bearer role, Shapiro stated on Friday that this does not alter Trump's abilities, which even his detractors must acknowledge.
"While it's tempting to dismiss Donald Trump as a liar and all the negative things he's been accused of, it's important to remember that he's a skilled debater and a showman who's been on TV before. So, don't underestimate him."
Kamala Harris has been known to him for 20 years, and he described her as tough as nails. As a prosecutor, she is prepared and ready to go. However, he acknowledged that the upcoming debate will be challenging.
In the 2020 cycle, Kamala Harris ran a different campaign than she is currently running. She has shifted her stance on several issues and has walked back previously held positions, such as calling for a ban on fracking.
The governor was then asked by her, "Do you think it's a strategic mistake that she hasn't explained some of the positions she's changed ahead of the debate with former President Trump on Tuesday, given that she'll likely be challenged on these issues during the debate?"
Shapiro replied, "I believe it shows courage to change one's stance," drawing from his own political background.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was chosen as Joe Biden's running mate instead of Shapiro.
Pennsylvania, with its 19 Electoral College votes, is widely viewed as a crucial battleground in the 2024 election, as the past four presidential winners have all won the state.
