George Clooney commends Biden's decision to step down as the "most selfless act" since George Washington.
In July, Clooney privately urged Biden to abandon his 2024 presidential bid.
On Sunday, George Clooney commended President Biden's decision not to run for re-election in 2024, calling it "the most selfless act anyone has done since George Washington."
In July, Clooney wrote a New York Times guest essay titled "I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee," where he admitted that Biden had declined and argued that the Democratic Party needed a new candidate to defeat Trump. After Biden eventually agreed, Clooney was ecstatic.
According to the Washington Post, Clooney praised the president who did the most selfless thing since George Washington when asked about the easiest thing to do.
"The selfless act of someone who relinquishes power is difficult to let go of, but it is a commendable act. We have witnessed such acts around the world. George Clooney praised the individual who suggested a better way forward, acknowledging that all the credit goes to him. However, the rest of the act will be forgotten in time."
At the Venice Film Festival, where his new film "Wolfs" premiered on Sunday night, Clooney did not mention Vice President Kamala Harris during his remarks, according to the Post.
Clooney expressed his pride in the current state of the world, which has surprised many people, and he believes everyone is excited for the future.
The Post reported that Clooney's call for Biden to step aside was a significant factor in the president's decision to leave the race, following his disastrous presidential debate that prompted several allies to publicly urge a new candidate.
Clooney wrote that it was disheartening to admit that the Joe Biden he was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the same Joe Biden of 2010, and he was not even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all saw at the debate.
"Did he feel tired and possibly have a cold? Yes. However, our party leaders should stop claiming that 51 million people didn't witness the same thing we did. We're all so scared of a second Trump term that we're ignoring every warning sign," he said. "This is all about age. There's nothing that can be reversed. We won't win in November with this president."
