Renting an apartment in Connecticut was more expensive than living in a hotel room as a single mother of three.
On Monday, Suzanne Hayes penned an article for Business Insider about her choice to stay at the Avon Old Farms Hotel instead of searching for an apartment.
Hayes searched Airbnb and Vrbo for long-term options but found them already booked. As a last resort, he contacted local hotels to inquire about rates. Suddenly, he received an email from Avon Old Farms Hotel, which made him feel like he had won the lottery.
The hotel offers a two-bedroom apartment on-site for longer stays at $2,200 per month, which includes all utilities and hotel amenities.
In March, Hayes was given a 30-day notice by her landlord and faced challenges in finding a new place to reside. Prior to the notice, she struggled to meet her rental obligations.
Hayes wrote that although he was on a month-to-month lease, he felt uneasy about the situation. Additionally, the house's yard, oil tank, furnace, and mice problem added to his sense of unease.
On Zillow, she discovered two-bedroom apartments priced at $2,700 per month and three-bedroom apartments costing up to $3,000 per month. Unfortunately, one of her applications was rejected due to her low credit score.
Hayes initially had reservations about staying in a hotel room with her children, but their enjoyment of the pool and game room, as well as the hotel's weekly deep cleanings and continental breakfast, helped her find comfort and ease.
Hayes concluded that this apartment was not the one he would have searched for, and he would not have considered a hotel for his housing needs. On paper, it did not seem like a good fit for him and his kids. However, the amenities provided by the hotel were a blessing, offering him the ease he had been praying for.
