Elon Musk receives unexpected support from X after Brazilian ban.
In Brazil, legal challenges are also being faced by Starlink, a company led by Musk.
The Washington Post's editorial board criticized the Brazilian government for moving to ban X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, despite the paper's frequent sharp criticism of the tech billionaire.
"The billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX is correct when he says that a Brazilian jurist's move to unilaterally prohibit X, which he owns, from operating in the country is an assault on internet speech around the world, as stated in an editorial by The Post titled "In this free speech fight, Musk's X has marked the right position.""
A Brazilian judge has ordered the "immediate and complete suspension" of a social media platform until it complies with all court orders and pays existing fines. Meanwhile, another Musk-led company, Starlink, is facing a legal battle to remain alive in Brazil after a Brazilian Supreme Court justice ordered that Starlink's financial accounts in Brazil be frozen.
The Post stated that Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes' efforts to close X have resulted in a significant expense to free expression. The court frequently issues mandates for removals and arrest warrants under seal, with minimal reasoning to justify them.
The justice warned he would arrest the legal representative of X in Brazil after it ignored the court's orders to block more than 140 accounts.
The lack of a physical presence by Musk's team in Brazil led to the escalation of the situation, resulting in the blocking of X for all 220 million Brazilians, who could face fines of almost $9,000 a day if they tried to circumvent the restriction, as reported by The Post.
"The paper stated that if the language used sounded authoritarian, it was true. Despite the potential threat to democracy posed by the accounts Mr. Moraes wanted removed, the threat from a government official limiting the speech of 220 million people was greater."
The Post stated that Mr. Musk's decision to freeze the assets of internet-provider Starlink, a separate company of his, aligns Brazil with countries like China and Russia, rather than with the free world.
The paper has defended Musk after he faced criticism from the Post for his ownership takeover of Twitter in 2022.
A Post reporter recently proposed that the Biden White House should prevent "misinformation" from being shared during an interview between Musk and former President Trump.
Fox Business' Stepheny Price contributed to this report.
