During an interview with CNN's Dana Bash on Sunday, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., confronted Kamala Harris' past rhetoric on "demilitarizing" schools in a heated exchange.

On CNN's "State of the Union," Cotton discussed the Apalachee High School shooting, where two teachers and two students were killed last week. The GOP lawmaker clarified his stance on school shootings after being asked about an Associated Press headline that suggested JD Vance had dismissed them as a "fact of life."

After Vance's team and online critics deemed the AP headline misleading, it was later replaced. At a rally in Phoenix last week, Vance stated that he does not like the school shooting being a fact of life before advocating for increased school security.

Cotton was asked by Bash if he agreed that school shootings like this have become a regular occurrence.

The Republican lawmaker refuted the Associated Press's distortion of JD Vance's quote, stating, "Absolutely not."

The 14-year-old shooter was taken into custody by school officers on site, and Cotton praised their actions. However, he also criticized Kamala Harris' comments about removing police officers from schools.

"Even though we are still collecting all the information, we know that the shooting wasn't as bad as it could have been because a police officer on school premises was able to neutralize the shooter. Kamala Harris has previously stated that she wants to remove police officers from schools," Cotton stated.

Last week, a 2019 video emerged showing Harris advocating for removing police officers from schools to "demilitarize" campuses while she was a California senator.

"Cotton informed Bash that Kamala Harris has consistently taken positions against law enforcement throughout her career as a San Francisco liberal. If the police officer hadn't been present, and Kamala Harris had succeeded in her efforts, many more students and teachers might have been killed."

The fathers of the victims of the 2018 Stoneman Douglas High School shooting condemned Harris' 2019 comments.

"Kamala Harris wants to make schools less safe. Your kids aren't safe with Kamala Harris in office," Petty, who lost his 14-year-old daughter Alaina Petty in the 2018 shooting wrote on X.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Harris promptly advocated for taking action against gun violence.

""We express our deepest sympathy to the students, teachers, and families affected by this shooting, and we thank the first responders and law enforcement for their quick actions. This shooting is a senseless tragedy, and we must put an end to the epidemic of gun violence in our country," Harris wrote on X."

Harris's campaign did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment on whether she still supports removing police officers from schools.
