CNN fact-checks Vance's joke about Walz's visit to a combat zone at the DNC in Chicago.
Walz's military record has been frequently criticized by Vance.
Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, ridiculed Alayna Treene of CNN for verifying a quip he made about Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn.
At a rally in Kenosah, Wisconsin, on Tuesday, Vance mentioned Walz's upcoming address at the Democratic National Convention and highlighted the ongoing controversy surrounding his description of his military record.
Vance remarked, "My theory is that they chose to hold the convention in Chicago because Tim Walz has been claiming to have served in war, and he could accurately say he visited a combat zone there." The crowd began cheering.
Vance's joke alludes to the Harris campaign sharing a video of Walz at a campaign event in 2018, where he stated, "We can make sure those weapons of war, that I carried in war, is the only place where those weapons are at." A CNN correspondent later verified that there is no evidence Walz carried weapons in combat.
Vance's joke was corrected by Treene after the event, as she pointed out that the location had been chosen over a year ago.
Treene wrote that Vance in WI believes his "little theory" about why Democrats chose to host their convention in Chicago is that it allowed Walz to accurately say he visited a combat zone. Democrats selected Chicago in April 2023, long before Biden considered dropping out.
"lmao," Vance replied.
Other social media users also mocked Treene’s post..
Sean Davis, co-founder of The Federalist, wrote that the journalists are so incompetent and damaged that they are now verifying evident jests.
Christopher Rufo, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, declared, "Jokes are now being fact-checked."
Fact-checking a joke can ruin your entire journalism career and make CNN the butt of the joke, according to comedian Tim Young.
Kyle Smith, Wall Street Journal film critic, joked that all jokes must be fact-checked.
On Wednesday, Vance made another joke about Walz's "stolen valor" during Trump's first outdoor rally since the assassination attempt.
During the North Carolina rally, Vance stated that he believed Stolen Valor Tim Walz would not lie about anything. In fact, he predicted that in his next speech, Walz would claim to have survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.
