CNN fact-checks Kamala Harris' claim that she made it clear in 2020 she wouldn't ban fracking.
VP faced tough questioning over her inconsistency on fracking after advocating for a ban in 2019.
Daniel Dale, CNN's fact-checker, disagreed with Vice President Kamala Harris' assertion that she had explicitly stated she did not support a fracking ban in 2020.
In recent weeks, Harris has faced criticism due to her policy flip-flops regarding fracking, which she previously called for a complete ban in 2019.
In an interview with CNN's Dana Bash on Thursday, Harris was directly questioned about her stance on a fracking ban.
"As vice president, I made it clear that I would not ban fracking. As president, I will not ban fracking."
Harris reiterated her stance on fracking during the 2020 campaign, stating that she had not changed her position and would not do so in the future.
During CNN's post-interview coverage, Dale stated that the fact-check conclusion was that she did not clearly state in a 2020 debate that she had changed her stance on a fracking ban.
In the 2019 clip, Harris stated that she was in favor of banning fracking. However, during the vice-presidential debate, she clarified that Joe Biden would not end fracking and had made it clear about it.
"It makes sense that at the time she was speaking, the president, not the vice president, set administration policy. However, others may have a different perspective. I did not hear anything in her statement about abandoning her previously expressed 2019 view. Instead, she was speaking on behalf of Joe Biden," Dale concluded.
Yamiche Alcindor, an NBC News correspondent, also criticized Harris for not providing an explanation for her policy shifts, stating that she keeps saying "my values haven't changed" while not explaining why her positions have changed.
Since emerging as the Democratic nominee, Harris had gone nearly 40 days without giving an interview or holding a press conference. Her refusal to do so was increasingly criticized, especially after last week's Democratic convention.
The VP faced criticism for her first interview with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz instead of a solo interview.
