CBS host pressed on Harris's responsibility for Afghanistan's 'failure' by asking: "You said that"
This year, some family members of service members who were killed in Afghanistan addressed the RNC.
Rep. Pat Ryan, D-N.Y., was questioned by CBS' Margaret Brennan about his past criticism of Vice President Kamala Harris and President Biden's foreign policy, specifically regarding the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
"You mentioned Afghanistan as a problem in your call for Joe Biden to step aside. You stated that it was a strategic and moral failure, and that withdrawal was the cause. The vice president claims she was the last person in the room on that decision. Is that failure also hers?"
Ryan stated that it is necessary to cease attributing political blame to essential matters such as national security.
"You said that," Brennan said, interrupting Ryan.
"Ryan replied, "As an American who has served in combat and has friends who have served in Afghanistan, I said it. If we don't allow ourselves to make mistakes and grapple with them, how can we continue to be a great country for the next 250 years?""
The decision to withdraw from Afghanistan has resurfaced due to the upcoming anniversary.
"The three-year anniversary of the ISIS-K suicide bombing at Abbey Gate, where 13 service people lost their lives, is approaching. Family members of some of those service people spoke at the RNC, expressing their disappointment that President Biden has not acknowledged their loved ones' deaths. Do you think Vice President Kamala Harris should address this issue now?"
Ryan stated that Trump has disrespected and belittled veterans in the US, specifically those who have received the Medal of Honor.
"Ryan stated that he believes the Democratic Party is a party of patriots, and individuals voting for Kamala Harris can feel that they are fulfilling their patriotic duty by bringing the country together and respecting veterans and military families who have made significant sacrifices. Kamala Harris has demonstrated this commitment and will continue to do so."
During her Democratic National Convention acceptance speech, Harris highlighted her foreign policy record and support for veterans, but omitted the 13 U.S. service members who were killed during the White House's botched withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive an immediate response from the Harris campaign when requested for a comment.
It is reported that the former president will visit Arlington National Cemetery to honor the fallen service members who were killed in the Kabul airport bombing during the Afghanistan withdrawal.
Planet Chronicle' Emma Colton and Danielle Wallace contributed to this report.
