Caitlin Clark's high school coach is ecstatic after the Iowa star's WNBA draft selection: "Pretty surreal."
The Indiana Fever choose Iowa Hawkeyes standout #1 in the WNBA draft.
Caitlin Clark is set to become a professional basketball player after being chosen as the top pick in the 2024 WNBA draft.
The former high school coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes star said it was a "pretty surreal" moment when the selection was announced, despite it being highly anticipated that she would be the first pick.
On "Fox & Friends" Tuesday, Dowling Catholic High School basketball coach Kristin Meyer expressed her pride and happiness for her player who went number one, saying, "I think we all knew she was going to go number one, but to actually see it happen and hear her name called, is just an incredible feeling."
During her four years of high school at Dowling, Clark's talent as the NCAA all-time leading scorer was evident from the beginning, as observed by Meyer, her coach.
From the moment I witnessed her play in the spring before her freshman year and then coached her that summer, it was evident that she possessed exceptional court vision, passing ability, and shooting skills. She stood out immediately.
Throughout her college years, Clark captivated audiences nationwide with her exceptional performances.
During her four seasons with the Hawkeyes, she averaged 28.4 points, with a standout 2023-2024 season where she scored 31.6 points per game, had 8.9 assists, and 7.4 rebounds.
In the previous season, she surpassed Pete Maravich's NCAA all-time scoring record, and also set numerous NCAA Tournament records, ultimately leading her team to a national championship. However, in the final match, Iowa lost to South Carolina, who remained undefeated.
Before the tournament, Meyer encouraged Clark to "enjoy the experience."
"A national championship awaits you. Best of luck, enjoy the experience, and have fun."
Clark ended her career with a total of 3,951 points, including 548 three-pointers made on 1,452 attempts for a 37.7% mark from beyond the arc.
While Clark is known for her competitive nature, she has a "fun personality" and enjoys having fun outside of sports.
Before a game, I had some free time and decided to do some coaching. When I returned, I saw her singing karaoke on the microphone, and the entire gym was empty except for her teammates.
"She's highly competitive on the court but off the court, she's all about having fun and living life to the fullest."
In second grade, Clark had a dream of playing in college and the WNBA, which Meyer took note of.
Meyer remarked, "It's amazing that she set that goal as a second-grader and worked hard to achieve it."
"Many individuals have grand dreams, but turning them into reality requires immense effort."
