Brit Hume doubts Biden's sudden decision to abandon the 2024 presidential race.
According to reports, Biden informed his aides the day before he withdrew from the race that his campaign was proceeding with its plans.
On Wednesday, President Biden spoke to the country from the Oval Office for the first time since he declared on the weekend that he would not run for president in 2024 and would instead hand over the responsibility to Vice President Kamala Harris.
Brit Hume, the chief political analyst at Planet Chronicle, expressed his skepticism towards Biden's justification for withdrawing from the presidential race after listening to his 11-minute address.
According to Hume, the president initially expressed his willingness to run for re-election and believed he had a chance of winning, but he eventually realized that it was time for a new generation of leaders.
Despite growing calls from members of his party to step aside after a disastrous performance at the CNN Presidential Debate in Atlanta, Biden informed his senior aides on Saturday that his campaign was proceeding as planned.
After speaking with two of his closest aides, the president appeared to change his mind about the direction of his re-election bid later that evening.
On Sunday afternoon, a letter was posted to Biden's social media account, formerly Twitter, stating his decision to "stand down" from the 2024 presidential race.
The 46th president stated in his fourth address to the nation that the only way to progress is by transferring power to a new generation.
Biden considered his administration's achievements over the past three years but stated that he wouldn't run for re-election because defending democracy is more crucial than any title.
"According to Hume, the mention of democracy and its importance in the speech suggested that there was some political motivation behind it, given that democracy and its preservation have been a central theme in the election campaign of both the speaker and Kamala Harris. However, Hume noted that there was a significant shift in the conversation overnight, and he was unsure if it was genuine."
"Looking back on this in hindsight, it will become clear that the president's decision to step aside was inevitable after the debate, and someone else would have had to take his place," he said.
Dana Perino, the former White House press secretary and "The Five" co-host, expressed her desire to be reassured that Biden has the ability to lead the country through the rest of his term after watching his speech, but ultimately felt that it was a "mini State of the Union."
"It was like something he could have given in January 2025. It rang hollow for me," she remarked. "It did not address any of the questions, and I believe it does not aid Kamala Harris in her attempt to break away from him as she tries to secure the nomination and defeat Donald Trump."
