Bernie Sanders claims that Kamala Harris is abandoning far-left policies in an effort to secure victory in the election.
'On 'Meet the Press,' Sen. Sanders stated that although her views differ from mine, she is considered a progressive.'
When asked about Vice President Kamala Harris's flip-flops on several progressive policy positions, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., gave a candid answer.
"On "Meet the Press," NBC anchor Kristen Welker questioned Senator Sanders about her previous support for Medicare-For-All and a ban on fracking, and whether she is now abandoning her progressive ideals."
"He replied, "I believe she's being pragmatic and doing what she thinks is best to win the election, rather than abandoning her ideals.""
As the Democratic nominee, Harris has shifted away from her previous support for far-left policies on immigration, energy, and healthcare.
During her first interview as the nominee in August, Harris stated that her "values remain constant."
"Harris stated to CNN's Dana Bash that the most crucial and noteworthy aspect of her policy outlook and choices is that her values have remained unchanged. She emphasized that she has always believed in the reality of the climate crisis and its urgency, and that it is essential to apply metrics that include adhering to deadlines around time. She highlighted her work on the Green New Deal and the Inflation Reduction Act as evidence of her commitment to addressing the climate crisis."
Harris stated that we have established objectives for the US and the world to achieve specific emission reduction standards.
My values regarding the need to secure our border have not changed. As the attorney general of California, I spent two terms prosecuting transnational criminal organizations for violations of American laws related to the illegal passage of guns, drugs, and human beings across our border. My values have not changed.
Sanders stated that his views differed slightly from Harris's, but he still viewed her as a progressive with shared objectives.
Sanders stated that Harris has a different strategy for achieving universal health care, which no longer involves supporting Medicare-For-All.
He continued, "Once again, I believe that expanding Medicare, Social Security, and lifting the cap on taxable income for the wealthy are crucial to raising Social Security benefits. Additionally, I think it's essential to increase the minimum wage from the current $7.25 to a living wage. If a candidate campaigns on these issues and raises questions about billionaires, they will likely win and potentially win big."
Before listing policies they share support for, Sanders reiterated that he considers Harris a "progressive."
She and I differ in our views, but I admire her progressive stance on issues such as making the child tax credit permanent, lowering childhood poverty by 40%, addressing the housing crisis with 3 million units of affordable housing, and expanding the union movement through the PRO Act. Despite our differences, I respect her commitment to improving the lives of Americans.
Planet Chronicle Digital has reached out to the Harris campaign for comment.
A campaign spokesperson previously confirmed to Planet Chronicle Digital that Harris had shifted her key policy positions and was adopting a "pragmatic" approach to "bring all sides together."
"While President Trump remains committed to the extreme views in his Project 2025 plan, Vice President Harris believes that effective leadership involves bringing people together to reach a consensus. This approach allowed the Biden-Harris administration to achieve bipartisan breakthroughs on issues such as infrastructure and gun violence prevention. As President, she will continue to take a practical approach, focusing on finding common-sense solutions to move forward."
Her positions have been formed through three years of successful leadership as part of the Biden-Harris administration, as stated by a Harris campaign adviser to Fox.
On Tuesday, former President Trump will engage in a debate with Harris, which will be hosted by ABC News.
Planet Chronicle' Adam Shaw and Bill Melugin contributed to this report.
