After the House hearing, both Republicans and Democrats called for the resignation of the Secret Service director in a 'basically unanimous' decision.
After the Trump assassination attempt, both parties are urging Kimberly Cheatle to resign immediately.
The House Oversight Committee's bipartisan group of lawmakers is calling for Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign following her inability to provide satisfactory answers during a hearing on the assassination attempt on former President Trump.
Reps. Byron Donalds and Ro Khanna have appeared on "Fox & Friends" to explain why they are calling for Cheatle's resignation following her refusal to answer a significant number of questions during her testimony before Congress on Monday.
"The Oversight Committee is divided on many issues, but there was near-unanimous agreement on this matter," Donalds said to Lawrence Jones on Tuesday. "She must depart immediately. It should have happened yesterday, and it needs to happen today. The Secret Service's mission is to safeguard former presidents, their families, key personnel, and leadership."
"Although President Trump's life was at risk, the speaker emphasized that the issue was not solely about him. Instead, it concerned Presidents Obama, Clinton, Bush, and Biden. The matter was extremely grave, and Congress members were determined to continue demanding action."
On Monday, Cheatle, who was subpoenaed to testify, declined to respond to most of the lawmakers' questions regarding the security lapses before the shooting at Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, frequently citing the ongoing criminal investigation.
Despite bipartisan calls, she refused to resign from her post, even though she had admitted under oath that the Secret Service had "failed" its mission on July 13.
"As director of the United States Secret Service, I take full responsibility for any security lapse of our agency. We are fully cooperating with ongoing investigations. We must learn what happened, and I will move heaven and earth to ensure that an incident like July 13th does not happen again."
"Khanna stated that "resignation is necessary" as "this is not a partisan issue." "The failure to protect the former president and the lack of confidence in the nation necessitate her stepping aside," he added. "Many people do not trust her, so she must resign.""
""I don't understand why she would want to stay on as the director of the Secret Service at this point, given the importance of confidence in protecting our leaders and the need for unity in our country," he said."
During the hearing, Cheatle was questioned by Khanna about the assassination attempt. Khanna asked if she considered it the most significant security breach since President Reagan was shot in 1981.
She agreed, but he used it as an excuse to push for her resignation. Despite this, she has not resigned yet.
"Donalds stated that she was evasive and uncooperative, just like Ro said. He added that she failed to provide any assurance to the members of Congress that she was capable of addressing the issues that occurred that day and preventing them from happening again. In his opinion, she should resign or be fired. He was surprised that she was still the head of the Secret Service."
The Secret Service has a mission that is unique among federal agencies, and this is a very serious matter. He emphasized that real accountability is necessary, and that simply saying "I'm responsible" or "It's on my watch" is not enough.
