ABC's muted mic debate rules remain unacceptable to the Harris campaign.
The Harris campaign seeks to modify the rules to keep microphones active during the debate.
The Harris campaign declines to endorse the rules for the upcoming ABC News presidential debate regarding the use of muted microphones.
The guidelines for the Sept. 10 debate, previously agreed upon by the Biden and Trump campaigns, stipulated that mics be muted during speaking time.
The Harris campaign claims that the rules are not yet finalized and is currently in negotiations with ABC.
On Thursday, Brian Fallon, a spokesperson for Harris, wrote that even though Trump stated on Monday that he would be okay with an unmuted mic, his handlers do not trust him to engage in a live sparring match with VP Harris and are requesting ABC to disregard Trump's comments and keep the mics muted. If they do not comply, the handlers may withdraw from the debate for the third time.
We have been asked to agree with Trump's handlers on this issue to maintain the debate. However, we believe Trump's team's stance is weak, and we are still discussing the final rules with ABC.
CNN correspondent Hadas Gold reported that the Harris campaign had been asked to allow the mics to be on during the debate, but they were not doing so. According to a formal list of debate rules sent out by ABC, the mics would be muted and largely follow the CNN rules.
Fallon insisted that the memo sent by ABC is a draft set of rules that both campaigns need to sign off on and indicate agreement. However, we have not done so because we think both candidates have expressed a clear desire to have hot mics. It is not clear why Trump staff is overruling their principal, who should be capable of making up his own mind.
He stated that this is the only remaining sticking point between the two sides.
In a comment to Planet Chronicle Digital, Jason Miller, a senior advisor to Trump, contradicted this statement.
"Kamala Harris' aides are attempting to maintain their justification for withdrawing from the debate if the CNN interview with Dana Bash does not go well, according to Miller," the ABC debate rules have been finalized.
The Harris campaign was contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital, but ABC News remained silent on the issue.
Despite President Biden withdrawing from the race, the Harris campaign continued with the planned ABC presidential debate. Later, after Trump agreed, the Harris campaign attempted to alter the rules to have the microphones live during the event.
Despite Trump's willingness to consider the idea, he and his campaign have criticized Harris for her sudden demand for modifications.
Trump stated on Monday that the agreement was to maintain the same rules, but now there is a sudden desire to alter the rules.
"I'd prefer it to be on, but the agreement was that it would be the same as last time, and since I didn't like it last time but it worked out fine, I'm okay with it being muted."
On Monday, Miller stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that the Harris campaign, after previously agreeing to CNN's rules, requested a seated debate with notes and opening statements. However, the Trump campaign refused to make any changes to the previously agreed-upon rules. If Kamala Harris is unable to repeat the messaging points her handlers want her to remember, that is their issue.
The Harris campaign appears to be following a pattern. They have prevented her from conducting interviews and press conferences, and now they want to provide her with a cheat-sheet for the debate. My assumption is that they are attempting to avoid any debates with President Trump.
