Until she watched the 'Pretty Baby' documentary, Brooke Shields' daughter was unaware of her mother's sexual assault.
For the first time, Shields disclosed in her docuseries that she was sexually assaulted by a prominent industry figure during her 20s.
Grier Shields, Brooke's younger daughter, first learned about her mother's sexual assault through the actress's 2023 documentary "Pretty Baby."
The two-part series examined Shields' career and highlighted the extensive media scrutiny and sexual objectification she experienced as the lead actress in the contentious films "Pretty Baby" and "The Blue Lagoon."
At the Sundance Film Festival in February 2023, Shields, 59, disclosed for the first time that she had been raped in her 20s by an unidentified industry professional.
Grier recounted her shock over the revelation during a recent interview with People magazine, alongside her mother and sister Rowan, 21.
"Grier stated that he was learning about things at the same time as the world, but he took it more deeply and personally, causing him to struggle to get through it."
Rowan was aware of the assault, but Grier was unaware, as explained by Shields, who shares her two daughters with her husband Chris Hency.
"The model confessed that they did not prepare her, stating that it was a misunderstanding. Although they had explained that it was an exploration of sexualization of women in their industry, they were under the impression that because they had a solid, healthy, and normal existence and were not completely damaged, she would react positively."
The actress, who has won two Golden Globe Awards, expressed regret for not discussing her experience with Grier prior to seeing her daughter's reaction.
Shields remembered how she told her friend, "But there’s a happy ending," to which she replied, "I will never be okay with thinking something bad happened to you."
"The actress added, 'She missed the happy part, felt helpless, and as mothers, we make mistakes and assumptions.'"
Shields acknowledged that being in a situation where one must choose between seeing a documentary or viewing their parents as a public figure with opinions about them is an unusual circumstance.
"Being a mom involves learning from your children," she stated. "I have gained a lot of knowledge through paying attention to them."
In March 2023, Shields shared her story of sexual assault in an interview with People magazine, explaining why she was ready to open up after more than three decades. "Pretty Baby" was released on Hulu in April 2023.
"I had to process it in my own way and on my own terms before I was ready, as it took me this long to fully understand it," Shields stated.
"People handle their trauma at different paces, and it felt right for me to process mine now."
