Ellen DeGeneres shares a controversial joke that almost cost her a career.
Ellen DeGeneres is set to release her final stand-up special this month.
Ellen DeGeneres is using her scandal as the source of humor in her upcoming Netflix special.
A new trailer for "Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval" has been released, featuring the comedian discussing her experience of being "kicked out of showbusiness."
"DeGeneres says, "The headline read, 'The 'be kind' girl wasn't kind.' The problem is that I'm a comedian with a talk show, and I ended each episode by saying, 'Be kind to one another.' If I had ended the show by saying, 'Go f--- yourselves,' people would have been pleasantly surprised to discover my kindness.""
The show hosted by DeGeneres faced criticism for being a toxic workplace and for allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior by former producers. It was reported that one producer was the center of complaints about the workplace culture.
The "be kind girl" headlines harmed her reputation, prompting her to cancel her show in 2021 and express regret to her staff. The final episode aired in May 2022.
In her apology video, DeGeneres revealed the reason behind her practice of saying "be kind" at the end of her shows, which stemmed from the tragic suicide of Tyler Clementi, a teenager who was bullied for his sexual orientation.
"Had I ended my show by saying 'go f--k yourselves,' people would've been pleasantly surprised to find out I'm kind." — Ellen DeGeneres
She stated, "I believed the world required more compassion, and it served as a reminder that we all needed it, and I think we need it more urgently now."
DeGeneres advised against using the title "be kind lady" as it can be challenging to maintain that image.
DeGeneres toured the special around the country before its official trailer was released on Netflix on Sept. 24.
In Santa Rosa, California, she informed the audience that she had no intention of pursuing a career in Hollywood.
According to SFGate, she told the crowd, "This is the last time you'll see me. After my Netflix special, I'm done."
Since the start of her career, DeGeneres' perspective on fame has evolved.
""Now I realize I said that during the height of my popularity," DeGeneres said, according to SFGate."
She later stated, 'I am many things, but I am not cruel.'
