The release of Prince Harry's paperback version of 'Spare' suggests a potential for royal family reconciliation.
In January 2023, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, published 'Spare,' sharing his experiences as the second heir to the throne behind Prince William.
In his 2023 book "Spare," Prince Harry revealed details about his life as the second son of King Charles III and Princess Diana.
Penguin Random House announced that the Duke of Sussex's memoir will be published in a paperback edition in the United States on Oct. 22 and in the United Kingdom on Oct. 24.
The paperback edition of the book will have the same cover image as the hardcover edition, a new packaging, and the contents will remain unchanged, according to Penguin Random House.
Prince Harry's interest in reconciling with his estranged family may have been sparked by his memoir, but it is believed that the reconciliation process had already begun prior to its release.
"Harry stated in an interview with People magazine that he did not want to dictate anyone's opinion about the book, including his family. The book, he explained, was a continuation of his own mental health journey and a raw account of his life."
According to Archewell, there are no plans for a longer version of the memoir.
In the book, the Duke of Sussex stated that he and Prince William pleaded with their father not to marry Camilla, despite the couple's long-standing relationship.
From the start of his relationship with Meghan Markle, Harry's family and the British press were skeptical about the American actress.
Harry's condemnation of tabloid coverage of their relationship led to William's fury. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex title caused tension between the brothers, resulting in William's alleged physical violence toward Harry.
The memoir was initially planned to be twice as long, but was eventually shortened from its initial version.
Harry revealed to The Telegraph in 2023 that the first draft of his book was significantly longer, consisting of 800 pages. It has since been reduced to 400 pages, making it more manageable. Harry described the process of cutting content as challenging, stating that it could have been two separate books.
He maintained that his book is not an attempt to "overthrow the monarchy" but rather to "rescue them from their own downfall," acknowledging that he will likely face criticism from many who will claim that he is "attempting to destroy the monarchy."
Harry stated in an interview that he sincerely desires to have his brother and father back in his life, but he urged the royals to apologize for their treatment of his wife. He said, "You know what you did, and I now know why you did it. You’ve been caught out, so just come clean and then we could all move on."
In January 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex relinquished their royal duties and relocated to Canada before eventually settling in Southern California.
In North America, Random House US will release the edition, while Transworld will handle distribution in the UK.
"Spare" achieved the status of an "instant No. 1 global bestseller" on its original publish date of Jan. 10, 2023, with more than 6 million copies sold in all formats across the world, according to the publishers. Additionally, "Spare" holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest selling nonfiction book of all time.
