The 2024 Emmy Awards: All You Need to Know
The Emmy Awards will be broadcast on ABC on Sunday.
The 2024 Emmy Awards are almost here!
The second Emmy Awards ceremony this year will be a fun night, with many of this year's biggest TV shows being honored on television's biggest night.
The Emmys ceremony in 2024 will have a second ceremony, leaving many viewers wondering how to watch the awards show, which shows will win the top prizes, and why there is a second Emmys ceremony.
Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming show.
What are the Emmys?
Since 1949, the Emmys have grown from six awards to numerous categories, necessitating the collaboration of three sister organizations to recognize as many projects as possible.
The Television Academy hosts the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Creative Arts Emmys, which recognize comedies and drama series that air in the evening. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences hosts the Daytime Emmy Awards, which honor soap operas and documentaries, while the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences provides accolades internationally.
The Television Academy's first step after conceiving the awards show was to devise a name for the accolade. Several television-related suggestions were put forth, such as Ike and Tilly, before settling on Immy, a nickname for the image orthicon tube utilized in TV recording. This name was later altered to Emmy to correspond with the female statue.
Who is hosting the 2024 Emmys?
For the first time in 76 years, the Emmys will be hosted by a father-son duo. Dan and Eugene Levy will host the iconic show at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
"Dan, who is not a stand-up comic, and his father are determined to make their event as great as possible. They want to create a welcoming and celebratory atmosphere for the huge night, which is significant to many people."
Dan and Eugene are Emmy winners, having won at the 72nd Emmy Awards for their work on "Schitt's Creek." Dan won an acting award, as well as honors for writing, directing, and producing the show, which swept every category it was nominated in.
Why are there two Emmy Awards in 2024?
The 2024 Emmy Award nominees were announced six months after the awards show had already aired in January, causing déjà vu for many television fans.
The 2023 Emmy Awards were postponed to January due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that occurred from May to November of last year.
The strikes prohibited actors from attending awards shows to advertise a struck project or receiving any award for a struck project. Additionally, it prevented writers from working for any struck companies, making it nearly impossible to hold a successful awards show.
The 2023 Emmy Awards ceremony, which aired at the beginning of 2024, honored performances that took place during the eligibility period of June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023. This year, the Emmy Awards are returning in September and will recognize performances from the current eligibility period, which is June 1, 2023, to May 31, 2024.
How are Emmy nominations received?
An actor can either have their performance or the series submitted for an Emmy nomination through an online portal by their producers or by submitting their own best work from that year.
While actors can only select one standout performance from a year, producers can submit up to six episodes of a TV show for evaluation.
The Television Academy's members vote to finalize nominations for best series, with actors voting in acting categories, directors in directing, and writers in writing.
The number of nominees for best actor in a limited or anthology series this year is seven, including Robert Downey Jr., who is nominated for his role in "The Sympathizer."
Where and how to watch the 2024 Emmys
