Selena Gomez grappled with grief over her inability to have children due to medical issues.
Benny Blanco, the producer of the upcoming film 'Emilia Perez,' is currently dating Gomez.
For the first time, Selena Gomez is disclosing a new heartbreaking challenge she has faced in her more than two decades in the industry, despite being open about her mental and physical health struggles.
"Emilia Perez, the star of "I haven’t ever said this," told Vanity Fair that she unfortunately can't carry her own children due to medical issues that would put her life and the baby's in jeopardy."
"That was something I had to grieve for a while."
In 2013, Gomez was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease where the body attacks its own healthy tissue. She underwent chemotherapy and, at age 24, in 2017, she had a kidney transplant due to complications from the disease.
"Gomez acknowledged that her path to motherhood did not go as she had envisioned it. She initially believed it would happen like it does for everyone. However, she is now grateful for the opportunity to consider surrogacy or adoption, which are both viable options for her."
If my mom wasn't adopted, I probably wouldn't be here. I'm not sure what her life would have been like. We're grateful for how things turned out.
The "Only Murders in the Building" star expressed gratitude for other outlets for people who are eager to become mothers. She admitted that she is one of those people and is excited for the journey ahead, even though it will be different. Ultimately, she stated that it will be her baby and she doesn't care about the differences.
Since July 2023, when she started dating music producer Benny Blanco, Gomez had been single for five years. Despite being unattached, Gomez had planned to grow her family by 35.
"I was single for five years before meeting my boyfriend, except for a few dates. After that, I realized that family was the most important thing to me."
Gomez, who has been linked to several other high-profile stars, including Justin Bieber, The Weeknd and Nick Jonas, gushed about her relationship with Blanco. "I’ve never been loved this way," she said. "He’s just been a light. A complete light in my life. He’s my best friend. I love telling him everything."
Although things are going well between the couple, Gomez says she isn't in a rush to get married. "We always make sure we’re protecting what we have, but there’s no rules," she said. "I want him to always be himself. I always want to be myself."
No matter what, I will always remain Selena Gomez and won't change my name.
