Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough discuss the reasons for their split.
From 2010 to 2013, the 'Dancing with the Stars' judge and 'American Idol' host were in a romantic relationship.
Julianne Hough is opening up about her past relationship struggles.
In a recent interview on the "Armchair Expert" podcast, with host Dax Shepard, Hough revealed the reasons behind her split with Ryan Seacrest, after three years of being together.
When Hough started dating Seacrest, she was just beginning her career while Seacrest was already well-established in the industry. Hough described the experience as feeling like "the rug was pulled out from under me" and she was suddenly exposed to things she "never knew existed."
"I had a fear that people would think I was with him for a specific reason, so I began to act more reserved. I knew that he had experienced similar situations in the past, and so I overcompensated by being flexible and adapting to others' needs for their happiness."
Shepard understood the "Dancing with the Stars" judge's situation, recognizing it must have been challenging to feel like people believed she was dating him for increased exposure.
Seacrest and Hough initially crossed paths on his radio show, but she was in a relationship with musician Chuck Wicks at the time. After their breakup, they started dating in the summer of 2010 and were together for three years before their 2013 split.
"I then started playing smaller. I know that that was his experience in past situations and stuff, and so I again overcompensated, [I] was malleable to fit into exactly what somebody needed me to be for them to be happy." — Julianne Hough
"When I decided to end things, I encountered several Brentwood moms and producers who questioned my decision. They asked, 'What are you doing?' I responded, 'What do you mean?' They replied, 'Your life is set up.' I retorted, 'But I didn't create it,'. I realized that I needed to take ownership of my life and feel the pride of accomplishing it."
Hough admitted that her behavior during her relationship with the "American Idol" host was a repeated pattern and she's uncertain if she's ever truly loved someone. She confessed that she enjoys the sensation of being loved and is always ready to do whatever it takes to receive it.
"Because I'm so filled with love from someone, of course I love you. I love everyone," she said. "I've been in love with everyone I've ever dated, but have I? I don't want to overanalyze it, because every person I've also dated has been a very good person."
Four years after her split with Seacrest, Hough started dating hockey player Laich and they got married in July 2017.
Although the couple had great love for each other, their marriage didn't work out, and they announced their separation in May 2020. She revealed that she had asked for the separation in September 2019.
In June 2022, their divorce was finalized. When speaking with Shepard, Hough explained that Laich was slowing down in his career while she was speeding up, saying, "He was contracting while I was expanding. We just couldn't find each other in that."
"Our relationship and marriage were perfect, and the end of it is also right," she said. "We both regret that it didn't work out because we didn't have the maturity to be together."
