Orlando Bloom feared he would die from losing 52 pounds for his new film.
Katy Perry, Bloom's fiancée, was taken aback by his sudden transformation.
In "The Cut," which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, Orlando Bloom lost nearly a third of his body weight to portray a revived boxer.
The actor, 47, revealed the demanding procedure, confessing that it affected not only his physical well-being but also his mental and emotional state.
"Bloom lost 52 pounds over a three-month period before filming, reaching his lightest weight just before filming. He struggled mentally during this process."
In an interview with People magazine, the actor who starred in both "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Lord of the Rings" revealed his intense preparation for a demanding role, stating, "I was extremely hungry. . . . The three weeks leading up to filming in London were solely consumed by tuna and cucumber."
In the movie, Bloom must rapidly lose a significant amount of weight in just six days to return to the ring.
"I dropped quite a lot of weight, and I was very mentally challenged as well." — Orlando Bloom
Katy Perry found Bloom's transformation in the film harrowing, according to Bloom. After watching the movie, Perry was "freaked out" and said she needed a drink, Bloom shared.
But she also cried.
"She was deeply affected. She understood the requirements," Bloom stated.
During filming, Bloom considered the possibility that he might not succeed.
"He said he thought he would die, but Perry supported him throughout the ordeal, which included the kids and other difficulties."
In 2020, Bloom and Perry welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Daisy Dove. Bloom first became a father in 2011, when he and ex-wife Miranda Kerr welcomed their son, Flynn.
Caitríona Balfe, Bloom's costar, revealed that having a family intensifies the difficulties of filming.
"Being single allows you to do things on your own, but when you have a family, you have to be a parent and come home."
Balfe said the English actor looked "gaunt" prior to filming.
"The metamorphosis was astonishing . . . I exclaimed, 'You resemble a raisin.'"
Bloom said that throughout the filming process, he gained weight back.
