Morgan Wallen faced backlash after Maren Morris' infant son received 'scary' death threats.
In 2021, Maren Morris criticized Morgan Wallen for using a racial slur.
Maren Morris and her infant son received death threats after she called out Morgan Wallen in 2021.
Morris has contemplated how people were so pissed off about her criticism of cruelty for years.
Morris stated that he believes the reason behind the intense defense of the person who used the N-word is because they are taking it personally, interpreting it as a criticism of themselves rather than a call-out of their behavior. This, Morris believes, says a lot more about their perception of criticism and the content of the statement than about the person making the call-out. Similarly, Morris believes that the intense backlash he received when he criticized transphobia in the past was due to the person's interpretation of his criticism rather than the content of his criticism itself.
Morris emphasized the need for the industry and Wallen to improve as peers.
Morris stated, "As a young mother, the death threat was undoubtedly terrifying. However, it wasn't directed at me but my son. This made it even more alarming because it involved the people I cared about the most."
"It's incredibly dangerous and scary."
Morris shares her 4-year-old son with ex-husband Ryan Hurd.
In 2021, Wallen faced backlash after a video of him using the N-word was released online. Despite being nominated for several Academy of Country Music Awards, he was not invited to the ceremony. Additionally, his record label dropped him and his music was banned from iHeartRadio.
Numerous celebrities, including Kelsea Ballerini and Morris, responded to the news on social media.
Nashville's news tonight does not reflect country music, according to Ballerini.
Morris tweeted, "This isn't his first 'scuffle,' and he just demolished a huge streaming record last month. We all know it wasn't his first time using that word. We keep them rich and protected at all costs with no recourse."
Months after the video featuring a racial slur surfaced, Wallen discussed it in an interview with Michael Strahan.
"Wallen stated that he was with some friends and they would often engage in playful banter, which sometimes sounded ignorant. He acknowledged that their behavior may have come across as insensitive, but it was not their intention. Wallen explained that he and his friends were all drunk at the time and he had asked his girlfriend to look after his friend because he was intoxicated. He emphasized that he did not mean his words in a derogatory manner."
