Lea Thompson describes Artem Chigvintsev as 'intense' following his domestic abuse arrest.
Nikki Bella's husband Artem Chigvintsev was arrested on Aug. 29 for domestic violence.
Lea Thompson, Artem Chigvintsev's former "Dancing with the Stars" partner, is discussing her experience working with the pro dancer just weeks after the 42-year-old was arrested for domestic violence.
In her podcast, "Sex, Lies and Spray Tans," the 63-year-old actress described Chigvintsev as "intense" during their rehearsals and admitted that he'd often "get mad" at her.
"Thompson shared with Burke that working with him was challenging due to it being his first year, and it was a significant matter for him. He was extremely focused and determined, which made it more important to him than to Thompson. This intensity made Thompson feel nervous and anxious after some time."
Thompson, who starred in season 19 of the dance competition show, stated that some of the things he would say to me were influenced by his Russian heritage, his experience as a ballet dancer, and the strict Russian dance teachers he had, which made it challenging.
She claimed that she was never allowed to ask, "Can I try this?" because he would become enraged, as if she was incapable of thinking about it.
Burke, a former "DWTS" pro who previously spoke about Chigvintsev's arrest being "shocking," now feels that the portrayal of their on-screen dynamic was "one-sided."
"When I saw you tell Artem not to speak to you in that manner, yet they didn't show what Artem was saying, it didn't make sense to me," she stated.
Chigvintsev made a "weird" comment that left Thompson questioning his beliefs, as he claimed, "men are much better than women because they're stronger," according to the actress.
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive an immediate response from representatives for Thompson and Chigvintsev.
On August 29, 2022, Chigvintsev, who married Nikki Bella in 2022, was arrested at approximately 9:40 am for domestic violence or corporal injury to a spouse, former spouse, cohabitant, former cohabitant, or the mother or father of his or her child, according to records viewed by Planet Chronicle Digital.
On the same day, the pro dancer was scheduled for 10:40 a.m. and released at approximately 2:18 p.m. on a bail of $25,000.
A court date has been set for Nov. 4.
"According to Napa County Sheriff's public information officer Henry Wofford, when someone is accused of felony domestic violence, it typically involves a visible injury or a credible eyewitness. In this case, the deputies felt confident in arresting the individual on felony domestic violence charges."
Wofford states that the victim's name is not being disclosed due to laws safeguarding the privacy of domestic violence victims.
The arrest comes two days after the couple celebrated their two-year wedding anniversary.
"This song is our love story," Nikki Garcia, the former WWE star, wrote on Instagram, accompanied by a video montage of their wedding day with "Can't Help Falling In Love" playing in the background. "I remember the moment I asked Jesus about Artem. It was a conversation with Him and God. My feelings felt too soon, and everything felt too fast. And then this song came on, and that's when I knew I was falling in love with him and that it was all meant to be."
Chigvintsev posted a tribute on Instagram, expressing his love and gratitude towards his partner.
The couple share a 4-year-old son, Matteo.
Bella, who was arrested days prior, co-hosted Netflix's "Joey Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef" hot live dog eating contest in Las Vegas and was conspicuously without her wedding ring.
In 2017, Chigvintsev and Bella met on season 25 of "DWTS" while they were partners together. Despite Bella being engaged to John Cena at the time, the couple ended their engagement in 2018.
