Jennifer Lopez should demonstrate her talent beyond the "tabloid headline" following her split with Ben Affleck, according to an expert.
After two years of marriage, Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck on August 20.
Jennifer Lopez has experienced both downfalls and victories in the public eye, including failed marriages, movie flops, releasing No.1 hits, and winning Golden Globe Awards.
Lopez, who filed for divorce from her fourth husband, Ben Affleck, on Aug. 20, has a lot at stake with a movie premiere scheduled in two weeks and reports of a possible Las Vegas residency in the works. Will public opinion surrounding her personal life impact her next professional move?
The Honig Company founder, Steve Honig, advises the singer to refrain from sharing too much on social media and let her talent shine through.
"Lopez should prioritize her professional exposure while minimizing personal exposure, according to Honig. She should focus on her work and let her talent shine through, rather than being defined by tabloid headlines. It's crucial for Lopez to demonstrate her worth as a performer who can endure challenges."
According to the New York Post, Lopez was reportedly in negotiations with MGM Grand for a guaranteed $1 million per show for 90 dates starting next year. However, a representative for MGM did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment.
It was announced three days later that Lopez had canceled her "THIS IS ME...LIVE" tour.
At the time, Live Nation representatives stated that JLo was taking a break to spend time with her loved ones.
"Lopez expressed her deep sadness and disappointment in her newsletter, stating that she wouldn't have let her readers down if it wasn't necessary. She vowed to make it up to them and promised they would be reunited soon. Lopez ended her message with love and a promise to see them next time."
To maintain a positive public image and secure her future, Lopez must continue to control the narrative of her own story, according to Doug Eldridge, founder of Achilles PR.
"Eldridge stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that ending a marriage and pausing her career is a challenging situation. Although details are scarce, speculation and rumors are filling the informational gap. PR 101 advises never leaving a story for someone else to tell, as it rarely results in a positive outcome. Additionally, having a client withdraw from social media could be the final straw, and we all know how that ends."
"In JLo's case, the details around the pending divorce are murky at best, so getting out of the literal spotlight is a risky proposition." — Doug Eldridge, Achilles PR
"Social media is a strategic and tactical tool for controlling and leveraging messages, particularly during polarizing divorces when one side often attempts to play the sympathy card. As I've always said, the only difference between a villain and a victim is who is telling the story."
Eldridge stated that due to the lack of clarity regarding Jennifer Lopez's impending divorce, it is risky for her to step out of the public eye.
If the timing of her impending divorce is played right, her career could potentially be boosted, said Eldridge.
"The issue of taking a break from social media is more complicated because Lopez has built his career on being at the center of pop culture, which is based on Q scores and popular trends. The marketplace moves at an alarming speed, making it difficult to predict what will be popular in the future, especially when you are already playing catch-up to global acts like Taylor Swift, who is single-handedly breaking revenue records."
"Lopez has successfully reinvented herself throughout her career while maintaining her core fanbase," he stated. "The timing here is like Double-Dutch on the playground: if you time it right, you'll come out in sync on the other side; but if you mistime it, you'll get the rope in the face."
Lopez's representative did not promptly respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's inquiry for comment.
According to documents obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital, Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck on Aug. 20 in Los Angeles County Court, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split.
According to court documents, Lopez stated that she did not want herself or Affleck to receive spousal support and listed their date of separation as April 26.
On the two-year anniversary of their Georgia wedding ceremony, Lopez filed the divorce papers.
In 2002, Affleck and Lopez became engaged after meeting on the set of their film "Gigli." However, their wedding, which was scheduled for 2004, was canceled at the last minute.
In Las Vegas, Lopez and Affleck got married in a surprise wedding ceremony twenty years later.
After not being seen together for 47 days, rumors of a split between Affleck and Lopez intensified when Affleck did not attend Lopez's "Bridgerton"-themed birthday party on July 2.
In "The Greatest Love Story Never Told," Affleck was depicted reluctantly dealing with the public scrutiny that accompanied the couple when they first began dating in the early 2000s.
The documentary revealed that they "caved under the pressure" of being a tabloid sensation, which put a strain on their relationship and led to the cancellation of their 2003 wedding just three days before the big day.
While Jen didn't object to the press as strongly as I did initially, I strongly objected to it.
"I said, 'Listen, I don't want a relationship on social media. But then I realized it's not fair to ask. It's like asking someone to marry a boat captain, you want to be with the water. We have different approaches, and we're trying to learn to compromise."
