Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck's relationship appears to be on the rocks, according to a new documentary.
'The Greatest Love Story Never Told' premiered in February, two months after their reported separation date.
Jennifer Lopez's documentary, "The Greatest Love Story Never Told," provided fresh perspectives on her relationship with Ben Affleck, some of which were uncomfortable to watch.
After Lopez filed for divorce in August 2021, the documentary took on new meaning. She filed for the dissolution of their marriage on the two-year anniversary of their Georgia wedding.
According to People magazine, the couple separated on April 26, two months after the release of the Amazon Prime documentary on February 27.
A review of "The Greatest Love Story Never Told" highlights the relationship's challenges before the breakup.
Love letters
Lopez reveals in the documentary that her new music was influenced by a set of handwritten love letters from Affleck, which she displayed to songwriters and musicians collaborating with her.
The handwritten note reads, "The Greatest Love Story Never Told by Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck 2001-2010…and counting…"
Affleck was clearly not pleased.
"I exclaimed, 'You've been showing all the musicians all these letters?' Affleck says in the documentary. "And they replied, 'Yeah, we call you Pen Affleck.' And I exclaimed, 'Oh my God.'"
He later revealed that he realized she drew inspiration for her music and film, "This Is Me…Now: A Love Story," from the letters. Nevertheless, he emphasized that things that are private are sacred and special because they are private.
Lopez admitted she was aware Affleck wasn't comfortable with the attention.
"He knows I'm an artist and he's going to support me in every way he can because he knows he can't stop me from making the music I made and writing the words that I wrote. That's going to happen, and he doesn't want to stop me," she said.
Back in the spotlight
Affleck struggled with having his relationship with Lopez back in the spotlight.
The documentary revealed that they "caved under the pressure" of being a tabloid sensation, which put a strain on their relationship and led to the cancellation of their 2003 wedding just three days before the big day.
While Jen didn't object to the press as strongly as I did initially, I strongly objected to it.
"I said, 'Listen, I don't want a relationship on social media. But then I realized it's not fair to ask. It's like asking someone to marry a boat captain, you want to be with the water. We have different approaches, and we're trying to learn to compromise."

Star signs
Jane Fonda, Lopez's co-star in "Monster-in-Law," is featured in a documentary about their relationship. In footage from "This Is Me…Now: A Love Story," Fonda confronts Lopez about a controversial photo of the couple at the 2023 Grammys, where Affleck appears unhappy.
Lopez dismissed Affleck's comment as a joke, saying, "I've become the symbol of the beleaguered man."
The elderly person, who is 86 years old, gave advice to those who publicly display their affection, suggesting they should retreat from the spotlight.
"Fonda stated, "I am invested in you and Ben, and I want this to work, but I have a concern. It seems like you're trying to prove something instead of just living it. Every other photograph shows the two of you kissing and hugging.""
"That's just us living our life," says the "Hustlers" star with a laugh, downplaying the situation.
Addicted to love
In the documentary, Lopez explores her own experiences with love and relationships, starting from her childhood, where she confesses to feeling "a little lost" as the middle child.
The 55-year-old woman admitted that she struggled with getting attention from her parents. She stated that her dad ignored her and described her mother as a "narcissist, always seeking attention, and the center of the party." She became accustomed to being around people like that.
Lopez's assessment of her childhood is affirmed by Affleck, who makes an intriguing comparison to addiction.
"He stated that the thing you discover, like with alcohol, is that there isn't enough of it in all the liquor stores in the world to fill it up. In Jennifer's case, he believes there isn't enough followers, movies, records, or any of that stuff to still the part in her that still feels a longing and pain. Ultimately, that's the work you gotta do on your own."

Not-so-gentle mockery
Lopez and Affleck collaborated on the screenplay for Lopez's film in the documentary, but their conversations resulted in one of the more uncomfortable scenes.
Lopez reveals that in one scene she was "opening her eyes in a hospital bed, younger, age 28." Affleck interrupts, questioning her age in the scene.
He joked that he loved it when he was portrayed as younger in the autobiographical.
Lopez replied, "This is not my autobiography. This is meta. I'm using some of my story."
"Semi-autobiographical," Affleck said. "It's your story, but younger." He chuckled as Lopez teased him, calling him an idiot, although she laughed along with him.
