Jenna Ortega, the star of Wednesday, addresses criticism over her comments about the show.
Wednesday earned Jenna Ortega nominations for Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards.
Jenna Ortega is addressing the criticism she faced after expressing her desire to alter her lines in "Wednesday."
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Ortega acknowledged that she could have expressed her involvement in the character's development more accurately when discussing altering some of her lines in a 2023 interview.
She admitted to Vanity Fair that she often feels like a rambler and found it difficult to represent situations accurately, which may have contributed to their poor reception.
In her March 2023 podcast appearance on Dax Shepard's "Armchair Expert," she stated that many of the "Wednesday" scripts did not make sense to her and that she would make changes without consulting the writers room.
""I almost became unprofessional on set when I started changing lines, but the script supervisor thought I was going with something. I had to sit down with the writers to explain why I couldn't go do certain things and they were confused about what happened to the scene," she said on the podcast."
The "Scream" star faced criticism online for her comments about the 2023 writers strike, with many listeners accusing her of being "entitled" and urging her to support the writers on the picket line.
"I probably could have used my words better in describing all of that. I think, oftentimes, I’m such a rambler. I think it was hard because I felt like had I represented the situation better, it probably would’ve been received better." — Jenna Ortega
Ortega recounted her experience, stating that it "felt almost dystopian" and as if everything she said was "magnified" and picked apart, explaining, "I felt like a caricature of myself." Through this experience, she learned a valuable lesson about living life in the public eye.
"It's impossible to satisfy everyone, and as a natural people pleaser, I found it challenging to comprehend this," she stated. "Not everyone will appreciate you, and that's perfectly acceptable."
In 2023, Ortega joked that her "face was everywhere" and the backlash she received was "fair enough" due to her overexposure to the public.
The actress who played Beetlejuice 2 said she would have reacted the same way if she opened her phone and saw the same girl with a silly quote, stating that she would get over it too.
Ortega received Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award nominations for her portrayal of Wednesday Addams in the Netflix show. She will return to play the character in the second season of the show, both as an actress and a producer.
"Ortega stated that the feel of the second season is more horror-inspired. However, they are not aiming to become the goriest show with six-year-olds watching. Instead, they are introducing Wednesday, who is a little bit of a jump scare herself."
The second season of "Wednesday" will be released on Netflix in 2025.
