Jana Kramer criticizes Blake Lively's 'It Ends With Us' for its depiction of domestic violence: "It does define you."
The premiere of 'It Ends With Us,' featuring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, took place on Aug 9.
As a survivor of domestic violence, Jana Kramer criticized the conversation around Blake Lively's newest film, "It Ends With Us."
Kramer stated on her "Whine Down" podcast that she wished for the messaging to focus on domestic violence in the media rather than discussing riffs and other unrelated topics. The movie's theme revolves around domestic violence.
The 40-year-old country singer appeared to be discussing the widely talked-about topic since the release of the Colleen Hoover book-turned-movie - the rumored drama between Lively and her co-star Justin Baldoni.
Kramer didn't watch the movie because it contained domestic violence, but she believed it was a "rom-com, girls' night out" type of film based on the promotional materials.
I was saddened when I learned about the interviews because I wanted the messaging to focus on domestic violence, helping people, and obtaining assistance.
Lively's statement that domestic violence does not define her character, Lily, was criticized by Kramer during an interview with the BBC before the Aug. 9 premiere.
Kramer stated that it is difficult for individuals to discuss domestic violence if they have not personally experienced it.
"Although people may claim that it does not define you, domestic violence has shaped who you are and has been a significant part of your life. It has defined you."
Kramer's first husband, Michael Gambino, subjected her to domestic violence during their brief marriage of less than a year.
"So, for people to say it doesn’t define you, it does define you… It has made me who I am. And though people can say, ‘It doesn’t define you,’ it is one of the biggest pieces of me, is domestic violence, and has been the biggest thread in my life." — Jana Kramer
"Kramer recounted in her book, "The Next Chapter," how she was frequently subjected to physical abuse, including having her head bashed into bathroom mirrors and being choked and shoved on a weekly basis. She also described how she felt trapped and helpless, with her abuser controlling her every move."
In 2005, Gambino was convicted of premeditated attempted murder after nearly choking Kramer to death. He was sentenced to six years in prison and later died by suicide in 2012.
The promotional tour for "It Ends With Us" sparked rumors of tension between Lively, Reynolds, and Baldoni, who directed and starred in the film.
Despite being the lead alongside Lively, Baldoni largely did his portion of the press tour solo. However, fans took to social media to share theories behind the peculiar aspects of the press tour.
At the film's premiere, Baldoni and Lively did not take any photos together, unlike what is usually done by the entire cast and romantic partners.
