Heather Graham, Jennifer Lopez, and Katy Perry had disagreements with their families and received warnings about Hollywood being corrupt.
The star of 'Austin Powers' was warned by her parents that Hollywood would corrupt her soul.
While some parents are excited about their children pursuing their Hollywood aspirations, others are not as enthusiastic.
Recently, Heather Graham disclosed that she has been separated from her parents for nearly three decades because of their unhelpful attitude.
Her father often told her that the entertainment industry was wicked and that Hollywood would corrupt her soul, as she revealed to The Wall Street Journal.
At 18, Graham left her parents' home following her successful role in "License to Drive" in 1988, recounting, "I thought to myself, 'I must escape, achieve success, and become a movie star'."
I stopped talking to my parents when I was 25 and am now estranged from them. My friends are proud of me, and I'm proud of myself. I have good friends.
Many stars, including Graham, have parents who did not support their aspirations of becoming famous.
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez, despite starting as a background dancer and eventually becoming an A-lister, faced opposition from her parents initially.
Lopez, who had been taking acting and dancing lessons for years, enrolled at Baruch College in Manhattan but dropped out after just one semester.
In a 2009 biography by James Robert Parish, "Wedding Planner" star Sarah Jessica Parker stated that her parents and others thought it was foolish to pursue a career in film as a Latina, as no one had done so before.
The decision caused a temporary estrangement for mother and daughter.
"In 2013, Lopez told W magazine that she and her mom had a disagreement about her decision to pursue dance full-time instead of going to college. As a result, they took a break. Lopez ended up sleeping on the sofa in the dance studio and becoming homeless. However, she persisted and landed a job dancing in Europe a few months later. Upon her return, she booked "In Living Color" and became a Fly Girl, eventually moving to L.A. All of this happened within a year."
In her 2022 documentary "Halftime," Lopez revealed that her mother was critical of her and her siblings.
"She did what she had to do to survive, and it made her strong, but it also made her tough," Lopez said. "She kicked our butts."
Lopez's mother, Guadalupe, confessed to being strict with her daughters.
"Although I wasn't the ideal mother, I always acted with my children's best interests in mind."
""Jennifer gave me the hardest time, but it wasn't to be critical. She only wanted to show me that I could do better," she added."
"I was homeless, but I told her, ‘This is what I have to do.’ — Jennifer Lopez
Dwayne Johnson
Before gaining fame in Hollywood, Dwayne Johnson was known for his wrestling career.
He initially followed in the footsteps of his father, Rocky "Soul Man" Johnson, with wrestling.
In 2021, Johnson said on "Today" that he had the largest fight between a father and a son over this, and essentially, he agreed with the other person, saying, "Look around. Look at what I have after all these years, and I want more for you."
"I said, 'I understand, but I also believe I have something to contribute.' Despite our disagreements, we continued to argue."
After my mom said, 'Let me talk to you for a second,' my husband agreed to train me.
On his NBC comedy series "Young Rock," the "Jumanji" actor delved into the complexities of his relationship with his father.
In 2021, during the TCA press tour, he stated that the process was "incredibly tough" and elaborated that there were many events that occurred between those years that made it complicated. He also mentioned that his relationship with his father was complex and was driven by tough love.
He would have been proud to see this world showcased for the first time in prime time, as it is a tribute to the men of the '70s and '80s who gave their lives to it.
Katy Perry
Katy Hudson, now known as Katy Perry, initially pursued a career in Christian music before transitioning to pop, which was met with opposition from her parents.
Over the content of her music, her parents and the singer have clashed in the media since her breakout hit in 2008, "I Kissed A Girl."
In 2013, The Huffington Post reported that Keith Hudson, an evangelical preacher and father of Katy Perry, referred to her as a "devil child" during a sermon, stating, "They ask how can I preach if I produce a girl who sang about kissing another girl? I was at a concert of Katy’s where there were 20,000. I’m watching this generation, and they were going at it. It almost looked like church. I stood there and wept and kept on weeping and weeping. They’re loving and worshiping the wrong thing."
Despite their differences, Perry and her family have kept a relationship since her fame.
In a 2017 interview with "Today," Perry stated that some people do not approve of certain actions he takes and wish he would engage in different activities.
In 2011, Vanity Fair reported that Perry stated, "As children grow, their parents also grow. Mine grew up with me. We coexist. I no longer try to change them, and I believe they no longer try to change me. We agree to disagree. They are thrilled about my achievements. They are happy that their three children are doing well and are not using drugs or in prison."
"They don’t agree with some of the things I do, and they do wish that I could do other things." — Katy Perry
Steve Martin
Despite his self-deprecating attitude, Steve Martin is widely regarded as a comedic genius.
"In his AppleTV+ documentary, "STEVE! (Martin) a documentary in 2 pieces," he stated, "I assure you, I possess no talent whatsoever. Absolutely none. As a result, I had to devise a work-around to appear on stage.""
In the documentary, Martin observed that his father, Glenn Martin, often came across as aloof and unapproachable.
"My father was always a little embarrassed by my unconventional showbiz act, which he couldn't understand. As a result, I became alienated from him, and negative comments from him only encouraged me."
While pondering over their intricate bond, Martin discovered his dad harbored dreams of stardom in Hollywood, which ultimately remained unfulfilled.
"Martin acknowledged the difficulties that the individual faced, including the immense stress of supporting the family while pursuing their hopes and dreams. The pressure must have been overwhelming."
In 2012, on "The Howard Stern Show," Martin revealed that after the release of his hit film "The Jerk," a friend asked his father about the movie, and his father responded, "He's no Charlie Chaplin."
"I always thought my father was a little embarrassed by me. He couldn’t quite be proud of an unconventional showbiz act that he couldn’t understand.' — Steve Martin
Emma Roberts
Emma Roberts, the daughter of Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts, discovered her passion for acting after observing film sets with her aunt.
Her mother was reluctant to allow her daughter to enter the family business.
In 2014, she told Elle that she didn't want to go into the industry young, as her family always encouraged her to become a doctor or lawyer. However, she ended up wanting to be an actor.
At age 9, Roberts made her acting debut in the 2001 drama "Blow," starring Johnny Depp. Later, at age 13, she landed a breakout role on Nickelodeon's "Unfabulous."
She said that her Oscar-winning aunt had not given her any advice, and no one had spoken to her about acting because they believed it was just a passing phase. However, she continued to pursue it.
Roberts recently revealed that her famous family has occasionally been a liability.
"I've lost more jobs than I've gained from being in the business," she admitted to Flaunt last month. "People have opinions, and sometimes those opinions may not be positive about family members. I've never been hired because of it, and I know I've lost a few jobs because of it."
