Heather Graham, known for her role in 'Austin Powers,' hasn't spoken to her parents since she was 25 years old.
Heather Graham, known for her role in "Austin Powers," hasn't communicated with her parents in nearly three decades.
Graham remembered leaving home at 18 to pursue her dreams of being part of the entertainment industry in West Hollywood, California, despite her father's warning that Hollywood would "consume" her soul."
"Graham stated in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that he frequently expressed his belief that the entertainment industry was corrupt and that Hollywood would corrupt my soul. She pointed out in the same interview that her parents, who belonged to a generation that did not believe in therapy or discussing personal matters, made her feel unable to confide in them."
After her movie "License to Drive" premiered in 1988, Graham decided it was time to leave her parents' home.
""Living at home had become more difficult when the movie came out, and I was 18. I told myself, 'I must leave, become successful, and become a movie star,'" she said."
"He regularly told me that the entertainment industry was evil and that Hollywood would claim my soul." — Heather Graham
Graham continued, 'I discovered an apartment in West Hollywood with a high school acquaintance who was a model and also involved in real estate investments. Sharing a home with her was liberating.'
At 9 years old, Graham's family moved from Virginia to Agoura Hills, California. The actress felt that she went from being popular on the East Coast to not fitting in on the West Coast.
"As a tomboy in Virginia, I loved exploring the woods. However, after our move, I became isolated and had to be driven everywhere. With no kids to play with in the street, I had fewer social interactions and grew insecure. To cope, I turned to books and read above my level," she said to the outlet.
After graduating from high school with a 5.0 GPA, Graham pursued a degree in English at UCLA. However, after her junior year, she decided to leave the university to concentrate on her acting career.
Graham landed major roles in "Austin Powers" and "Swingers," which made her realize she was "self-sufficient" and prompted her to reevaluate her relationship with her parents.
"Graham confessed that he stopped communicating with his parents at the age of 25 and is now estranged from them. However, he stated that his friends are proud of him, and he is proud of himself. He added that he has good friends."
The actress, who is 54 years old, is proud of the life she has created for herself. She resides in Los Angeles in a house she purchased last year. Additionally, she owns a loft in New York. Notably, her West Coast home boasts views of the Pacific.
"The ocean inspires me, and I enjoy sitting out back while writing or preparing for a movie. Nature is also a source of inspiration for me."
In "Chosen Family," Graham wore multiple hats as the actress, writer, and director of the film, which is set to debut in October. For her next project, "The Gunslingers," she will star alongside Nicolas Cage and is set to be released in 2025.
