Ed O'Neill receives a message from Sofia Vergara urging him not to pass away so they can revive "Modern Family."
The popular sitcom "Modern Family" aired on FOX for 11 seasons from 2009 to 2020.
Sofía Vergara hasn't ruled out the possibility of playing Gloria Delgado-Pritchett again.
The former "Modern Family" star expressed her desire to be on the show's set again in a recent interview with Variety. She suggested a TV movie reboot, stating that it would be "so much fun."
"Modern Family" aired for 11 seasons from 2009 to 2020, and although Vergara acknowledges that it may be too soon for a reboot, she has one major concern about co-star Ed O'Neill's availability when the time comes.
Vergara always joked with him, saying, "Don't die, Ed, because if we do a sequel, it will take some time, and you're the oldest of us. You can't be dead!"
The age of O'Neill, 78, is frequently discussed between the two former co-stars, with Vergara revealing that she contacted O'Neill after watching him in the new FX miniseries "Clipped" to say, "You look f---ing old."
O'Neill's age has led to some amusing interactions with other "Modern Family" cast members, as Jesse Tyler Ferguson revealed on his podcast in March. Ferguson shared that O'Neill frequently FaceTimes him by mistake and is always taken aback when Ferguson responds.
Vergara also says O'Neill leaves her voicemails meant for others.
"I always joke with him, ‘Ed, don’t die. Because if we do the sequel, it will take some time, and you’re the oldest of us. You can’t be dead!'" — Sofia Vergara
"Vergara stated on the podcast that she believes the reason behind her father-in-law's frequent messages to her is because her name is Sofia and his daughter is also named Sophia. She explained that he would always begin his messages with "Sophia, it's Dad." At first, she found it confusing as to why he was calling her by her daughter's name, but eventually she realized that it was because he was addressing his messages to his own daughter."
As a fictional couple with a significant age gap, O'Neill and Vergara portrayed a husband-and-wife duo in a TV show. The couple navigated the challenges of blending their families, which included his two older children and their kids, as well as her young son.
The show quickly gained popularity and received 22 Emmy Awards, including five consecutive wins for outstanding comedy series. Vergara was also recognized with four Emmy and four Golden Globe nominations for her performance.
In November 2023, the cast of the show reunited at Vergara's house, four years after the show ended. However, Ty Burrell, who played Phil Dunphy, was absent from the reunion.
"Even though we haven't seen each other in so long, it felt like we just left the set in 2020, Vergara told People at the time."

Some of the cast members, including Burrell, Julie Bowen, Ferguson, and Eric Stonestreet, have reprised their characters for WhatsApp commercials, despite Vergara's statement that it's too soon for a reboot.
The foursome's photos from the commercial set were shared on Instagram by Stonestreet, with the caption "It was great to reunite with some of the band members."
