Nicole Kidman is mourning the loss of her mom, Janelle Ann Kidman.
On Saturday, Halina Reijn delivered a statement on behalf of Kidman, who won the best actress award for "Babygirl" at the Venice Film Festival but couldn't attend the ceremony due to family obligations, to share the news of her mother's passing.
"Upon my arrival in Venice, I discovered that my mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, had recently passed away. In a statement, Kidman expressed her shock and the need to be with her family. However, she emphasized that this award was for her mother, who had greatly influenced and shaped her."
A spokesperson for Kidman verified the death and stated to Planet Chronicle Digital, "The family is devastated and kindly requests privacy during this difficult time."
Kidman has often spoken about her strong relationship with her mother and her mother's health challenges.
In a 2022 interview with NPR's Fresh Air podcast, Kidman stated that her mother is giving her the opportunity to see the world through an 81-year-old woman's perspective. This is particularly beneficial because her mother is highly conscious and has not lost any memory or brain faculties. She is extremely bright and has not lost anything.
"She's granting me access because she's direct and honest, and so I'm gaining insight into the world through her perspective, my mother's perspective. At almost 80, a part of me is learning from her unique journey."
In 2020, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that Kidman's mom has always motivated her to pursue her aspirations.
"Kidman stated in 2020 that her mother had given her the motivation to pursue her desired career because she always wanted to please her, but also encouraged her to forge her own path and let her daughters do the same."
"Kidman stated that although her mother didn't achieve the career she desired, she was determined to give her daughters equal opportunities. This has been a significant influence on Kidman's life. She also acknowledged the role her parents played in shaping her life."
Kidman's father, Antony Kidman, died in 2014.
