'Dance Moms: A New Era' faces criticism over JonBenét Ramsey-inspired dance routine: 'Offensive and insensitive'
Gloria 'Glo' stated that Ramsey was a 'pageant queen with glitz.'
The new episode of "Dance Moms: A New Era" is generating buzz.
In episode 8 of the Hulu series "Glo Don’t Give with Both Hands," 11-year-old dancer Ashlan is given a dance routine inspired by the tragedy of JonBenét Ramsey.
The child beauty pageant winner was murdered Christmas Day 1996 at age 6.
Gloria "Glo" Hampton assigned the dance routine to Ashlan and informed her that Ramsey was a "glitz pageant queen," according to Entertainment Weekly. Glo leaves it up to Ashlan and her mother Lisa to research everything about Ramsey.
Lisa, motivated for her daughter to reach nationals, shares with Ashlan the timeline of the Ramsey murder investigation.
"Even though this isn't my thing, I'll do whatever it takes to succeed," Ashlan stated.
Ashlan is being coached by Hampton, who says, "It's a sad, tragic story, remember."
According to the Daily Mail, Hampton stated, "You're portraying a child who was showcased in pageants, and your parents desire fame and celebrity for you. However, do they truly want that for you?"
At one point during the sequence, Ashlan put her hands around her neck. Ramsey was discovered strangled to death.
Ashlan ended up taking fourth place.
"She told her mother that she knew how JonBenét felt and always felt like she wasn't good enough, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly."
Numerous individuals voiced their disapproval of the contentious show through social media.
One person on Reddit found it extremely disturbing that with cases like Jonbenet and Gypsy Rose, several documentaries and movies have been made about them, causing people to blur the lines and forget these are real-life children.
"A dance about Jonbenet would never be tasteful because it would only highlight the tragic murder of a child. A beauty pageant routine would have been a better choice without exploiting the horrific event."
"Another user stated that the most distressing aspect for them was Ashlan's mother revealing the entire story to her, which evidently caused her distress. They were astonished by how much Ashlan resembled Jon Benet."
"The dance did not accurately convey the story of JBR, as another user pointed out."
"That 'joke' was gross and sad. It was like a real little girl happened to," one user wrote.
Hulu declined to comment on Planet Chronicle Digital's request.
"Dance Moms: A New Era" is a revival of the original "Dance Moms" show on Lifetime, which ran from 2011 to 2019 and featured Abby Lee Miller.
