Christopher Reeve's Wife Shares "Words That Saved My Life" in Documentary.
Theaters to Showcase 'Super/Man' on Sept. 21 and 25
The journey of Christopher Reeve, the star of "Superman," from onscreen hero to real-life hero is being chronicled for global audiences.
"The Christopher Reeve Story," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, is now hitting theaters for a wider audience.
The film's new trailer showcases footage of the actor's family, including his children Matthew, Alexandra, and Will, as well as his late wife Dana, who passed away from lung cancer in 2006, and his famous friends Susan Sarandon and Glenn Close.
In 1995, Reeve suffered a spinal cord injury when he fell from a horse during an equestrian competition, resulting in paralysis from the neck down.
In the trailer, Reeve can be heard saying about the accident, "I ruined my life and everyone else's. I won't be able to ski, sail, throw a ball to Will, or make love to Dana. Maybe we should let me go."
As she recounts her memory of Dana entering the hospital room and declaring, "I love you, I love you," Alexandra's eyes fill with tears.
She said the words that saved my life: 'You're still you, and I love you.'
Through The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, Reeve became heavily involved in disability advocacy and fundraising for spinal cord injury research, as well as lobbying for legislation to support stem cell research.
In the "Super/Man" trailer, Reeve is heard saying, "I knew I had to act not just for myself, but for everyone else who was going through the same thing."
In 2004, at the age of 52, Christopher Reeve passed away nine years after sustaining an injury.
"And then she said the words that saved my life: ‘You’re still you. And I love you.’" — Christopher Reeve
In January, Will, the youngest son, revealed to Deadline that the 20-year anniversary of their father's death in 2024 felt like the perfect opportunity to reintroduce him and his inspiring story to the world.
The documentary was credited to the team behind it, including directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui. The team was trusted to create an honest and vulnerable portrayal of the family's experience. That trust has been rewarded with a documentary that the family is thrilled to share with the world.
"The Christopher Reeve Story" will be shown in select theaters on Sept. 21 and 25, with an encore presentation on the latter date, which is his birthday.
