Chappell Roan's criticism of 'creepy' fans is defended by Jewel, who recalls a stalker leaving firebombs outside her house.
Fans were criticized by Roan for their "creepy behavior," which involved stalking and harassment.
Chappell Roan's criticism of fans exhibiting "creepy behavior" was defended by Jewel, who shared her own experience with "hundreds of stalkers."
Roan was defended by Jewel, 50, who revealed she experienced stalking at a young age when she "went gray overnight" at 21.
""This person was leaving firebombs outside my house and I was getting death threats saying I would be shot from the stage. I've had hundreds of stalkers in my career and it's not okay. It made me step back from my own career. I quit after 'Spirit' and 'Hands' because it was just too much," said Jewel in a TikTok video."
Eventually, Jewel was able to establish boundaries with her fans, as she recounted in one instance when a fan stood six feet away from her and declared, "I want to tell you how much I love your music."
"I hope you all know that everybody is worthy of compassion. Even if you’re rich. Even if you’re famous. We must show, if that’s a value of ours, to have compassion, to be tolerant, we have to be willing to understand the joys and the struggles of other people’s lives." — Jewel
"She remembered how the feeling of safety she experienced made her feel comfortable enough to take a picture. However, she also recalled the times she was chased in airports because she wouldn't stop, and how a man once called her a "b----" and yelled at her through the airport. She believes that people should not be made to feel unsafe."
She expressed "complete backing" for Roan, stating, "I'm proud of your accomplishments."
"Compassion is a value we must uphold, regardless of wealth or fame. We must be willing to understand and empathize with the struggles and joys of others' lives."
At 17, Roan initially joined Atlantic Records by posting singing videos on YouTube. Later, she began touring with notable artists such as Fletcher and Olivia Rodrigo.
In 2020, the Pink Pony Club singer was dropped by Atlantic Records. She then began developing her music independently, which led to her being picked up by Island Records a year later. Her 2024 Coachella performance went viral, seemingly catapulting her to megastardom overnight.
Roan's latest album, "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess," is at number four on the Billboard 200, while he has seven songs on the Billboard Hot 100.
Roan stated in TikTok videos that abuse and harassment, stalking, etc. are typical behaviors towards famous or semi-famous individuals.
"I don't care that it's typical," she stated. "I don't care that this unconventional behavior is associated with my job or career path. That does not make it acceptable. That doesn't make it standard. That doesn't mean I approve of it. Doesn't mean that I enjoy it."
Roan, currently on "The Midwest Princess Tour," criticized fans who believe they are entitled to a photo, hug, or time with her.
"She stated that she didn't care about what others thought they were entitled to when they saw a celebrity, and she didn't feel bad about saying no to a photo, time, or hug if she thought it was selfish."
"That's not typical. That's bizarre," she remarked. "It's bizarre how individuals assume that you know someone simply because you see them online and listen to their art. That's messed up. I have the right to refuse creepy behavior."
