At age 61, Demi Moore believed she had no place in Hollywood following her 40th birthday.
An aging celebrity discovers a way to rejuvenate herself in 'The Substance,' but faces dire consequences.
At age 40, Demi Moore appeared in a bikini in the film "Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle."
The Hollywood beauty revealed to actress Michelle Yeoh in an Interview Magazine conversation that she had done "Charlie's Angels" and there was a lot of discussion about a bikini scene, which was heightened and focused on her appearance as she entered her 40s.
I felt like I didn't belong in the place I found, even though I was already a mother of three. It was more like I felt the opposite of belonging, as if I wasn't old enough or young enough to be a mother.
She stated that her 40s were a period when she felt neither alive nor thriving in her profession.
The actress, who is 61 years old, is promoting her new horror film "The Substance," where she portrays a 50-year-old celebrity who discovers a way to temporarily rejuvenate herself, but with unintended consequences.
In the interview, Moore described the movie as a distinctive approach to examining the topic of aging, societal expectations, and the pressure to conform to the male-idealized woman image that many women internalize.
"The essence of the matter lies in our actions towards ourselves, which was vividly depicted in the physical representation. I appreciated how the illustration demonstrated the destructive impact of self-attack and distortion. It is empowering to recognize that our actions towards ourselves are a result of our choices, and we have the ability to make a different choice."
In the 1980s and '90s, Moore became a renowned sex symbol in Hollywood through films such as "St. Elmo's Fire," "Ghost," "Indecent Proposal," "Striptease," and "G.I. Jane."
She was also the highest-paid actress in Hollywood for a time.
In 2019, she shared with Diane Sawyer how her "I don’t have anything to lose" mindset came from dropping out of high school, leaving home as a teenager, being raped, witnessing her mom attempt suicide multiple times, and trying to make it in Hollywood.
At that time, Sawyer was informed by her that she had nothing, so why not?
Following her divorce from Bruce Willis in 2000, Moore wed Ashton Kutcher, a union that garnered significant media attention due to the age difference between them.
In their 10-year marriage, Moore became known as a "cougar."
Kelly Ripa recently joked on her "Let’s Talk Off Camera" podcast that being a "sex symbol" was her "greatest role" because "it’s so not who I am."
"She acknowledged that she enjoys being busy, despite earlier comments about her career being always on fire. However, she clarified that this was not entirely accurate, as she felt that when she turned 40, she was not given the same opportunities as before. She explained that this shift in perception was evident in the way women in their 40s were perceived, and she felt that she was part of the transitioning crowd who were not given much to do."
Ripa stated that Moore aided in changing the view that women in their 40s are no longer attractive.
Ripa remarked, "I'm not sure if it was 'Charlie's Angels' or when you emerged from the water in a bikini and said, 'Remember me? Here I am,'" she said.
At the time, Moore was told she was too young to play certain parts, but she was also too old for many others because she was not 30 years old.
Moore stated, "I was told, 'We don't really know what to do with you.' It's been interesting to see the shift we've gone through."
Streaming services are recognizing the demand for content that caters to a diverse group of women, including those in their 50s, 60s, and 70s, which is an exciting development.
Currently, Moore is occupied with various projects. Besides "The Substance," she recently completed the limited series "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans." She also appeared in Nicolas Cage's 2022 film "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent," and she is set to star in Taylor Sheridan's upcoming drama "Landman."
