In 2019, the Duchess of Sussex visited a bookstore with her head down and wore a hat while seeking the "safety" she craved. Later, the "Suits" star would complain about the media scrutiny that came with her title.

"Markle revealed at the opening of the Montecito bookstore, Godmothers, that sneaking to New York five years ago was a significant milestone for her. Despite still feeling uncomfortable being out in the world, she knew she could find safety and comfort in a bookstore."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex resigned from their royal duties in January 2020 and relocated to California with their two children. They no longer maintain an official residence in the U.K.

The new neighborhood bookstore, owned by literary agent Jennifer Rudolph Walsh and entrepreneur Victoria Jackson, was celebrated by a long list of celebrities over the weekend. Among those who attended the opening were Meghan and Harry, Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, Jane Lynch and more.

At the book party for his memoir, "Spare," Harry named the new community space after his "fairy godmothers," Winfrey, Jackson, and Jennifer Rudolph Walsh.

The "Our Local Authors" display on Godmothers showcases Harry's memoir, Markle's children's book "The Bench," and titles from Rob Lowe, Cameron Diaz, Winfrey, DeGeneres, and other local authors.

Montecito, a celebrity-studded town, is home to Godmothers, a restaurant located on a street corner.

Since 2020, Prince Harry and Markle have made Santa Barbara County their home, where they have lived outside the royal bubble.

In 2021, the royal couple sat down with Oprah Winfrey to discuss their reasons for leaving their senior royal roles. Markle disclosed that she experienced suicidal thoughts following her marriage to the prince.

"She confessed to Winfrey that she didn't want to live anymore, which was a persistent and terrifying thought for her."

The royal family was criticized by Prince Harry and Markle for their handling of the racism directed at the actress in the press. Despite the couple's request for the palace to "call the dogs off" and "share some truth," their demands were not met.

Harry stated that he saw an opportunity for his family to publicly support the union and show their support, given the specifics of the union and his wife's race.
