An autopsy of Richard Simmons unveiled that the fitness guru had prescription drugs in his system.
Richard Simmons passed away in July at the age of 76.
On Thursday, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office made public Richard Simmons' autopsy report, revealing that he had prescription medication in his system at the time of his demise.
The official report, obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital, stated that toxicology studies on postmortem specimens revealed the presence of diphenhydramine, trazodone, and zolpidem.
The cause of death was not due to these.
The medical examiner's report states that Simmons' official cause of death was due to injuries sustained from blunt trauma, while arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease was listed as a contributing condition.
On July 13, the day after his 76th birthday, the fitness guru known for his "Sweatin' to the Oldies" workout videos passed away. His longtime representative, Tom Estey, confirmed his death to Planet Chronicle Digital.
"Toxicology studies performed on postmortem specimens revealed the presence of diphenhydramine, trazodone, and zolpidem. These do not appear to have contributed to the cause of death." — Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's report
A 76-year-old man experienced a cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles home, prompting first responders to be dispatched. Despite not identifying the individual, LAFD confirmed that the patient was declared dead at the scene due to natural causes.
On the day before his passing, Simmons expressed gratitude to his fans for their birthday wishes, stating on social media, "I have never received so many messages about my birthday in my entire life!"
The former fitness coach, who retired from the public eye 10 years ago, expressed gratitude for being alive on his birthday after being diagnosed with skin cancer.
Simmons stated that he intended to extinguish a candle to commemorate the event, but "the candle will likely be situated on a zucchini. As a vegetarian, I am aware of this."
"He expressed gratitude for being alive and spending his birthday helping others, as he does every day."
In March, Simmons shared with his followers that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer. He used Facebook to describe the discovery and the treatment he received in an effort to eliminate the cancerous cells.
A day after causing concern among fans with a social media post about feeling "dying," Simmons revealed his diagnosis.
At that time, he wrote: "I have some news to share with you. Please don't be upset. I am dying."
He continued, "We are all dying every day, getting closer to our death with each passing moment. The reason I'm telling you this is to encourage you to live life to the fullest every day. Wake up in the morning, look at the sky, count your blessings, and enjoy."
At the time, his representative informed Planet Chronicle Digital that he was not dying, and the post was intended to be motivational.
In 1948, Simmons was born in New Orleans and later relocated to Los Angeles, where he shed over 100 pounds before establishing The Anatomy Asylum gym in Beverly Hills in 1974.
In 2014, after many years of being in the spotlight, Richard Simmons stopped teaching at his fitness studio and withdrew from public life. This sudden disappearance led to a podcast called "Missing Richard Simmons" and various theories about his whereabouts, including one suggesting he was being held captive by his housekeeper in his Hollywood Hills home.
Planet Chronicle Digital's Brie Stimson contributed to this report.
