A Hallmark actress recovers and takes her first steps after surviving a fall from a 5-story hospital balcony.
In May, a 20-year-old 'When Calls the Heart' actress, Mamie Laverock, was put on life support after falling from a balcony walkway at a Vancouver hospital.
In May, Mamie Laverock of the Hallmark Channel marked a significant milestone in her recovery from a five-story fall from a hospital balcony.
On Friday, the 20-year-old actress from "When Calls the Heart" shared a video of herself taking her first steps.
"Thank you surgeon's, thank you prayers, thank you Lord. Mamie has just taken her first steps," the caption read.
Laverock sat on a hospital bed with a patch over her left eye and both feet in aircast boots as two family members stood behind her before joining others who were behind the camera.
A medical staffer stood on Laverock's left side while another wheeled a walker and placed it in front of her.
Laverock stated, "I am uncertain if I can continue..."
A staffer on her right said, "I'm here to assist you."
The actress then placed her hands on the walker.
The same medic advised Laverock, "You can push off from the bed even if that's all you can do."
The walker was carefully lifted to her feet by Laverock, who held onto one of her arms while the other hand rested on the bed. The group behind the camera applauded and cheered as the scene unfolded.
The TV star smiled.
"Here's to standing," she said.
""It feels really strange," Lavarock remarked."
One of the medical workers asked Laverock, "How does it feel on the feet?"
"It feels very wobbly," she responded.
One of Laverock's family members remarked, "It's similar to wearing ski boots."
"Yeah, it is," she agreed.
The medic to her right inquired, "Could you slightly separate your feet?"
Laverock nervously laughed and said, "Wow, these ski boots are really tough!" She then fidgeted with her knees before looking up with a smile.
The medical worker instructed, "Place all your weight on the right and slightly on the left."
Laverock turned to the medic on her left and said, "I'll hold your hand for support."
Laverock's family member informed her that they were currently video chatting with her father, John, via FaceTime.
"It feels really weird." — Mamie Laverock
The staffer informed her that they would begin and gradually adjust to standing upright since she had been seated for a while.
Laverock remarked, "I feel like I'm about to tumble backward."
The medic instructed her, "You can simply lean through the walker as it's designed for that purpose."
"Is Dad on FaceTime?" she asked, looking at the camera as an actress in "The Killing Game."
"Dad," she greeted, beaming, as he responded, "Sweetheart."
"She informed him, "I'm standing beside the walker alone.""
Laverock advanced by placing her left foot forward and then taking additional steps.
"Wow! Feet moving!" a family member exclaimed as the video ended.
Laverock's family established a GoFundMe page in May to raise funds for her medical expenses after she fell off a balcony weeks after an undisclosed medical emergency. The page is now closed.
Since May 26, her family has expressed gratitude for the doctors and nurses who have been exemplary in her care, as she underwent two 11-hour surgeries with two doctors working on her, a three-hour surgery and another surgery today. Her body has been shattered.
Despite experiencing "tremendous pain," Mamie remains determined and does not give up.
"Our daughter cherishes her life, family, and battles daily with determination."
Laverock, who had been receiving intensive treatment for two weeks, was escorted out of a secure hospital unit and led to a balcony walkway, where she fell five stories.
Nicole Rockmann and Rob Compton previously shared that their daughter sustained life-threatening injuries, underwent multiple extensive surgeries, and is currently on life support.
Nicole arrived in time to save Mamie's life, who was originally admitted to a hospital in Winnipeg, Canada, due to a "medical emergency" on May 11, according to the GoFundMe statement.
"Since her transfer to Hospital in Vancouver, Mamie's recovery remains uncertain, but she is currently alive and demonstrating progress."
Two weeks later, her family wrote that they were "devastated, in shock, at this intensely difficult time," and that Mamie was now on "life support."
In June, Rockmann informed the Los Angeles Times that Laverock had "opened her eyes" and was "doing well."
"I hope this is the turnaround for her, and she will get through this now. I'm thrilled that people reached out and showed care. The story will be shared," Rockmann stated.
On July 9, Laverock turned 20 at the hospital. She shared a photo of a balloon rainbow made by artist Evelyn Milanes, captioning it, "Thank you, Evelyn. Your dedication and affection resulted in such stunning balloon art."
"My miracle birthday..somewhere over the rainbow," she added.
On her birthday, Rockmann shared a photo of her hugging Laverock.
"At that moment, we realized we could have our first hug," she wrote in the caption. "Thank you Rob for capturing this moment."
