A'ja Wilson breaks Angel Reese's WNBA record after an injury ends the season.
Last week, Reese released the second episode of her podcast, following her season-ending injury.
Angel Reese, the Chicago Sky rookie, no longer holds the WNBA record for the most rebounds in a single season.
Reese, a 22-year-old player, set a record with her 418th game on Sept. 1, when the Minnesota Lynx defeated the team 79-74. However, she had to end her rookie season prematurely due to injury on Sept. 7 and later underwent surgery on her wrist.
In just 10 days, A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces broke the rebounds record held by Reese, setting a new bar at 451 total rebounds. Wilson also has one more game to go to set the bar even higher, as Las Vegas hosts the 9-30 Dallas Wings on Thursday night. Additionally, Wilson broke the single-season scoring record on Sept. 11.
Reese was on track to break the record with eight games left on the schedule before she suffered an injury.
Rewritten: Although Reese was not as close of a contender as Clark for the WNBA Rookie of the Year award, there were many who believed she deserved it more than Clark earlier in the season.
Joakim Noah, a former NBA All-Star, stated on Planet Chronicle Digital that he would choose Reese over Clark for Rookie of the Year if he had the opportunity to make the decision.
Noah's preference for Reese's play over Clark's is not based on any statistical evidence. Despite being 6-foot-11, Noah appreciates the similarities between Reese's 6-foot-3 play and his own. Reese's height advantage played a significant role in her achieving historic rebound numbers, with her average being more than twice that of Clark's when he was injured.
Earlier this season, WNBA legend Lisa Leslie stated that Reese and Clark should be jointly awarded Rookie of the Year.
Reese's height advantage over Clark has led to stronger finishes in the paint and physical blocks and block attempts. However, some instances have resulted in hard fouls being called against Reese for her defense on Clark. For example, during a game on June 16, Reese attempted to block Clark's layup but missed the shot. In her attempt to block the shot, Reese accidentally hit Clark in the head from above, resulting in a flagrant 1 foul being called against her.
Clark has become the only player besides Wilson to hold a single-season record in one of the three major statistics of points, rebounds, and assists. On Sept. 13, Clark broke the assists record, and on Sept. 16, he broke the single-season rookie scoring record.
Despite her injury hindering her performance on the court this season, Reese has continued to pursue her media career.
Reese has released two episodes of her podcast, including an interview with Polo G on Sept. 12. In these episodes, she has discussed her rivalry with Clark.
Reese recounted her most memorable encounter with Clark, the 2023 NCAA women's basketball championship game, and the moment she raised her finger in triumph as a turning point in her life. She asserts that this incident sparked a sequence of heated exchanges between certain Clark supporters and Reese and some of her Chicago Sky teammates.
Reese stated that he believes it's the fans, specifically her fans, who are devoted to her, and he respects their loyalty. However, he added that sometimes their behavior can be disrespectful, and he believes there is a lot of racism involved in their support.
