George Clooney lauds "extraordinary" Biden, talks about NY Times essay that urged president to withdraw.
According to Clooney, it's challenging for Biden to relinquish power, as he stated on Jimmy Kimmel's show.
President Biden was commended by George Clooney for deciding not to run for re-election following a New York Times article written by the actor that advised him to do so.
On ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", the late night host praised Clooney for writing the opinion piece, but Clooney argued that Biden's sacrifice should be celebrated instead.
On Tuesday night, Clooney told Kimmel that it's difficult to relinquish power, but President Biden did something truly remarkable.
In a New York Times guest essay published in July, Clooney urged Biden to abandon his plans for a 2024 presidential bid, citing his poor debate performance against Trump as evidence of his inability to win another term.
The actor stated that the topic of the piece was age, and nothing more. However, he also pointed out that there was nothing that could be reversed. He added that they would not win in November with the current president. In the same piece, he mentioned observing Biden's frailty during a Hollywood fundraiser for his campaign in June.
Clooney wrote that it was disheartening to admit that the Joe Biden he was with at the fundraiser three weeks ago was not the same Joe Biden who was known as a big deal in 2010. He was also not the same Joe Biden who was seen at the debate.
In late July, the president eventually announced his departure from the presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him as the Democratic ticket's top candidate.
In his Tuesday night show, Kimmel declared that Clooney's essay influenced the Democrats' decision to replace Biden, asserting it "revolutionized the world."
Clooney insisted that the focus should be on Biden's sacrifice rather than the enormous impact on the presidential election, as Kimmel had asked.
You swung big and thank God you hit the ball out because it could have gone very, very badly.
Though Kimmel wasn't pessimistic, Clooney replied, "It could still go badly."
The comedian replied, "I'm not sure. It appears to be going well at the moment," while implying that Harris was polling better against Trump than Biden prior to his replacement.
Clooney commended Biden's decision to withdraw from the presidential race, stating in an interview with The Washington Post, "The individual who deserves recognition is the president who made the most selfless move since George Washington."
