Report: Twins cut prospect after he allegedly revealed pitching secrets to opposing batters
At Coastal Carolina, Bender excelled as a standout player.
In three collegiate seasons, Derek Bender was a standout catcher at Coastal Carolina, hitting 32 home runs and batting .326.
In July, the Minnesota Twins drafted Bender in the sixth round, and he began his career playing for the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels in the Florida State League. However, after 19 games, it was reported that his time in the Twins' farm system had ended.
ESPN reported that Bender was cut after he revealed the types of pitches that were coming to the plate in a game that ended his team's playoff hopes.
Last week, the Lakeland Flying Tigers inflicted a loss on the opposing team, with Bender allegedly revealing the specific pitches to the batters. Despite this, Lakeland scored four runs in the second inning and emerged victorious with a final score of 6-0.
According to reports, Bender informed his teammates that he wished for the season to end early, and he spent the last two games of the season in the bullpen.
The Twins and his agency declined to comment, according to ESPN.
During the season, Bender spent time at both catcher and first base. He played in 19 games and hit .200 with two home runs.
