Northern Illinois records first ever win over top-10 opponent, Notre Dame suffers stunning upset.
As the fifth-ranked team in the nation, the Fighting Irish began the game.
The 35-yard field goal by Northern Illinois kicker Kanon Woodill in the final minute was the deciding factor in the Huskies' game against the fifth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
In South Bend, Indiana, Northern Illinois won an improbable 16-14 victory over Notre Dame, despite the latter's last-second comeback attempt.
The Huskies' upset marked their first non-conference victory against a ranked opponent since 2003, when they defeated the 21st Alabama Crimson Tide. Additionally, this win was Northern Illinois' first against a top-10 team in the AP Top 25.
With a 14-13 lead in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame was on the verge of gaining some separation from Northern Illinois. After gaining possession of the ball following a punt with 7:49 remaining, the Fighting Irish drove from their 25 to the Northern Illinois 49.
Kris Mitchell was intercepted by Amariyun Knighten, who returned the pass 33 yards to the 50-yard line with 5:55 remaining.
Woodill's winning field goal was set up by Knighten's interception, which was his third of the day.
With 8:28 remaining in the first quarter, Notre Dame scored the first touchdown as quarterback Riley Leonard evaded the Huskies' defense for an 11-yard run.
Before traveling to Purdue on Sept. 14, Notre Dame is expected to fall significantly in the rankings. Meanwhile, Northern Illinois will have a bye week before hosting Buffalo on Sept. 21.
