Nick Kyrgios proposes to coach Coco Gauff after her recent struggles and disappointing US Open performance.
Coco Guaff is defeated by Emma Navarro in the Round of 16.
Since 2022, Nick Kyrgios has not participated in any of tennis' four Grand Slam tournaments, despite reaching the Wimbledon final and the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open that same year.
Kyrgios played in exhibition mixed doubles at Flushing Meadows a week before the U.S. Open began, but did not participate in the official competition.
Kyrgios offered his expertise to Guaff after she failed to win the U.S. Open women's title for the second consecutive time.
Emma Navarro, a fellow American, defeated Gauff in the Round of 16 at the last Grand Slam of the year on September 1st, and also eliminated Gauff from contention at Wimbledon in July.
Kyrgios interviewed players at the U.S. Open Championships after serving as a guest commentator for ESPN during the Australian Open.
Kyrgios, known for frequently changing coaches, stated that he is open to coaching Gauff in addition to his broadcasting responsibilities.
Kyrgios responded to a critical tweet about Gauff's coach Brad Gilbert by stating that he would coach her.
Although Gilbert coached American tennis stars Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi, he has faced criticism after Gauff's early departure from the Open.
Kyrgios is familiar with dealing with critics.
As he gained popularity in tennis, he became a divisive figure due to his perceived work ethic. Some criticized him for his behavior, which included directing profanity at officials and making obscene gestures during matches. He was also known for spitting at fans.
His early struggles were acknowledged, but others commended him for improving and maturing as he gained experience.
In the fourth round of her match with Navarro, Gauff became visibly frustrated and appeared to say, "Tell me something!" as she looked toward her box inside the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The 20-year-old was charged with 60 unforced errors in the match.
In January, Aryna Sabalenka, a Belarusian star and former No. 1-ranked player, defeated Gauff in the semifinals of the Aussie Open.
