Mark Rypien, the Super Bowl champion, is not a fan of the Commanders' nickname.
For 6 years, Rypien was a member of the Redskins team.
The Washington Redskins' last Super Bowl victory and appearance were led by Mark Rypien, who was the quarterback at the time.
During an interview on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, Rypien stated that he is not a fan of the Washington Commanders brand, despite the team undergoing rebranding since abandoning their nickname.
The former star quarterback stated that he never played for the Commanders, despite supporting the brand and its current activities.
"Nowadays, we must confront the reality that we must deal with. I hope they don't forget that we were 'Redskins.' That's all I played for. That's what I knew, and that's all we remember."
Rypien played for six years with Washington and was a Pro Bowler twice. He had 15,928 passing yards and 101 touchdown passes. He helped the team win Super Bowl XXVI against the Buffalo Bills, 37-24. He was named Super Bowl MVP.
"We will back these guys because this is the time we live in. I am not a Commanders' icon. I am a Redskin. I adore my teammates," he stated.
"I want to help these players and this team return to the football style of the Redskins during our time."
Before the start of the 2020 season, the Washington Football Team was previously known as the Redskins, and its owner, Daniel Snyder, changed the team's name amid a summer of racial tension in the United States.
He then rebranded the team as the Commanders.
It was stated by Josh Harris, the current team owner, that reverting to the previous name was not an option.
Harris stated in August, via The Athletic, that the old name cannot return due to obvious reasons. Currently, the focus is on unifying the team and the city around the football team. The primary objective is to start winning football games and have everyone supporting the team, rather than things that will divide people.
"We are trying to find a new home, and it is important to unify the city around it. The name of the new home is a topic of many opinions, but I haven't forgotten about it. As I mentioned earlier, I grew up here, so I understand it."
