Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Glavine praises Paul Skenes as a must-watch pitcher for the Pirates.
This season, Skenes has a 2.10 ERA and a 10-2 record.
Since his MLB debut, Paul Skenes, the rookie of the Pittsburgh Pirates, has been making waves in the baseball world.
On a recent episode of OutKick's "Don't @ Me with Dan Dakich," baseball Hall of Famer Tom Glavine discussed his observations of the Pirates' promising young star.
Glavine stated, "Skenes obviously burst onto the scene and had a ton of success, and for obvious reasons. The stuff is there. There is not much to not like about him, if anything."
"He is one of those guys who, when you turn on the TV, you can't help but watch him pitch because it's usually pretty good."
In May 2024, the Pirates called up the 22-year-old Skenes to the big leagues after he was selected first overall in the 2023 draft out of LSU. Since then, Skenes has been one of the best pitchers in the National League.
The rookie phenom has a 2.10 ERA and has struck out 151 batters in 120 innings.
In his latest start, Skenes surpassed the Pirates' franchise record for most strikeouts in a season, which was previously held at 142, set in 1900.
To maintain his success, Glavine advised Skenes to stay ahead of the curve.
According to Glavine, baseball requires staying ahead of the curve, as many players, including himself, have experienced. The unknown factor with Paul when he came up was evident, and one can only observe a player's true character by stepping in the batter's box and seeing their pitches and reactions.
As teams become more familiar with you, you may need to make subtle changes. I'm not saying he has to do a lot; in fact, he doesn't have to do much at all.
"Adjustments are necessary for everyone, as possessions can only take you so far. While they are valuable, they have their limits."
Glavine would know what it takes to stay ahead of the curve.
In his 22 years in the majors, the two-time Cy Young award winner had a career ERA of 3.54 and recorded 305 wins.
In 1995, the 10-time All-Star played a crucial role in the Atlanta Braves' World Series victory, earning the World Series MVP award.
Skenes' impressive performance has propelled him into discussions about the National League Rookie of the Year award.
