FSU suffers an upset loss to Georgia Tech in the beginning of the college football season.
The game-winning field goal was successfully kicked by Aidan Birr as time ran out.
College football is back with a bang.
In the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday, the 10th-ranked Florida State Seminoles were upset by the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, with Aidan Birr kicking a game-winning field goal as time expired.
Florida State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei led a 15-play, 84-yard drive, which included two fourth down conversions, to tie the game at 21. However, that would be the last time Florida State would have the ball.
Haynes King, the Yellow Jackets quarterback, consumed 6:33 of game time across 12 plays, allowing his kicker to potentially secure victory.
In the second half, Birr missed the target by 52 yards on the first possession, but he made up for it with a successful shot from 41 yards, which just barely fit inside the left goalpost.
The 2024 season began with Florida State dominating the game, as Lawrance Toafili scored the first touchdown on a 28-yard run. The Seminoles then executed a trick play on the extra point, securing a two-point conversion and taking an 8-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets quickly scored a touchdown in response, with backup quarterback Zach Pyron replacing King at the one-yard line and scoring on a QB draw.
The Yellow Jackets were able to rely on King's consistency throughout the day, as he completed his tasks with both his arms and legs. He ended the day with an impressive 11-for-16 record and a total of 146 yards, while also running the ball 15 times for 54 yards.
Jamal Haynes, the running back of Georgia Tech, ran the ball 11 times, achieving 75 yards and scoring two touchdowns in the team's victory.
It was FSU’s first loss as a double-digit favorite since 2021.
The Seminoles suffered their second consecutive loss after being defeated 63-3 by the Georgia Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl, despite having a 13-0 record and not making the College Football Playoff.
Boston College will be the target for the Seminoles to fix their issues at home on September 2.
Georgia Tech aims to build on its home upset win against Georgia State Panthers on August 31.
