Alex Morgan's competitive soccer career has ended.

On Thursday, Morgan, the Olympic gold medalist and longtime star of the U.S. women's national team, announced her retirement in a video shared to X, formerly Twitter.

"I am thrilled to share my decision with you, which has been a long time coming and was not an easy one. I have been playing soccer for a while now, and at the beginning of 2024, I knew in my heart and soul that it was time for me to retire from the sport."

Morgan ended her USWNT career with 123 goals, fifth all-time, and 53 assists, ninth all-time in U.S. history. The USA's record in matches with Morgan is 177 wins, 15 losses, and 32 draws.

Morgan, who has made 158 starts in her 224 international appearances, is the ninth-best scorer in U.S. history. She has captained the USA 23 times and has never lost a match in which she scored.

Morgan played on the winning team of the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015 and 2019.

Morgan stated through the U.S. Soccer Federation, "Growing up on this team was more than just soccer."

The unwavering respect and support among each other, the relentless push for global investment in women's sports, and the pivotal moments of success both on and off the field are what make me so incredibly honored to have borrowed the crest for more than 15 years.

"I learned so much about myself during that time, and much of it is thanks to my teammates and fans. I am incredibly proud of where this team is going, and I will always be a fan of the USWNT. My drive for success has always been there, but what I received in return was more than I could have ever imagined."

Morgan also revealed that her family will be growing in the coming months.

"I am pregnant. Although this news came as a surprise, we are thrilled. Family is everything to me, and I wouldn't be where I am today without my loved ones supporting and uplifting me for the past 15 years as a professional athlete."

Morgan is scheduled to play in her final game on Sept. 8.
