School board faces backlash from Latino parents following teacher's 'racist' anti-Trump outburst.
The Moreno Valley Unified School District board was pressured to dismiss a teacher who made derogatory remarks about Latino Trump voters.
The Latino parents gave the southern California school board a scolding after a high school teacher's profane rant against Latino voters who backed President-elect Donald Trump went viral.
On Tuesday, several students, parents, and members of the public attended the Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) board meeting. While some students spoke in support of AP World History teacher Maximiliano Perez, who was placed on administrative leave, others were outraged by his behavior.
Last week, American Culture Project senior fellow Corey DeAngelis shared clips of a Mexican-American man's rant on social media, which went viral. In the clips, the man warned students that they could face "concentration camps" or have "no human rights" due to Trump's policies.
He also made several disparaging comments about Latinos who voted for Trump.
Perez expressed his frustration with the many Latino men who secretly wish they were White and will never admit it, including his own fathers, uncles, and grandfathers. He also criticized these men for oppressing women in their families, including their own daughters, and for voting for politicians who want to oppress them. Perez's rant was lengthy and filled with anger.
According to audio from the MVUSD YouTube channel, several Latino community members at the school board meeting demanded that the teacher be held accountable for his unacceptable and unprofessional behavior.
"Can you guarantee that every child who has a teacher whose father or grandfather voted for President Trump will not be bullied?"
She stated that it was time for the school district to put an end to hate speech being tolerated in class.
"I am offended by the suggestion that a Hispanic man wants to be White. I am Mexicana, Chicana, and indigenous, and my family voted for Trump."
She demanded zero tolerance for hate speech and the teacher should be fired.
As an individual, Kenneth Prado, a trustee in the Hemet Unified School District, criticized the teacher's comments as bigoted.
The student population of MVUSD is predominantly Hispanic, with 75% of the students being of Hispanic descent.
He told the board that the racist comment he made was the worst, as he stated that their fathers, who were blessed to have their fathers in their homes like himself, voted for Trump only because they wished they were White. He expressed shame on the person and stated that he would do his due process.
Another Latino conservative urged the board to remove a teacher who was using offensive language and targeting conservative individuals. "He's cussing and calling people like us who are conservative, that we want to be White," Oscar Avila stated. "I say you strip him, he can’t work with schools anymore, remove him of his duties."
Fred Banuelos, a Mexican-American Trump supporter, deemed Perez's classroom statement "unacceptable."
"He should not have used profane language in our schools. While he has the right to say such things, it was unacceptable. He crossed a line," he stated.
"There needs to be some major consequences," he continued.
Opposing voices were stifled by the leaders as they had to wait over three hours to address the board during the public comments section, and a still image was put over the video when they spoke. Several parents accused the leaders of trying to suppress their criticism.
DeAngelis recorded and shared clips of X speakers' comments during the meeting, including both images and audio.
An investigation into the actions of a Moreno Valley Unified School District teacher who was placed on administrative leave has been launched, according to the district's previous statement to Planet Chronicle Digital.
"The district has launched an investigation after a staff member at one of its high schools discussed the election results in an unprofessional manner. The staff member has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing. The district values the diversity of its community and aims to create a respectful and inclusive learning environment that supports all students."
Thank you to those who spoke up and shared their concerns with us. Through collaboration, we can maintain a positive and supportive educational environment for all students in our Moreno Valley Unified School District.
On Tuesday morning, dozens of students at Valley View High who supported Perez staged a protest and demanded the school reinstate him, as reported in The Los Angeles Times.
At the board meeting, five of the teacher's students defended him against being fired for the incident, stating that he should not be dismissed for it.
"Ezell Moreno, a student, stated before the board meeting that he believed the way the teacher approached the situation was unprofessional, according to a report by the LA Times. He added that while he believed the teacher had good intentions, he wondered if he would be fired for one incident despite his many positive contributions as a teacher."
Jailene Bailey stated that the teacher had "saved her life" during a difficult time by providing her with encouragement.
""I am grateful to Mr. Perez for saving my life and encouraging me to pursue my education. He made me feel valued in a sea of students, and I believe he has the power to help others in the same way. I hope to see him again in the future and give him a big smile and wave," she said."
